CORRECTED: (ISC)2 Launches Associate Program

6/23/2003 -- On Friday, Vienna, Va.- based International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium [(ISC)2] announced a new Associate program that allows candidates without the requisite security background to become official Associates of the organization while pursuing the organization's Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) titles.

Candidates still must have the required experience levels to become CISSPs or SSCPs (four years and one year, respectively). However, with the new program, those who pass the exam(s) without the requisite experience will now become a Associates of (ISC)2. While they won't be able to use the titles of CISSP or SSCP until the experience requirements are met, they will be able to access benefits of (ISC)2, such as a member-only forum, while gaining that experience.

"The Associate program is designed to accelerate the professional growth of practitioners worldwide by encouraging individuals entering the field to…pass a rigorous exam and subscribe to (ISC)2's code of ethics as early as possible in their careers," James E Duffy, CISSP and executive director of (ISC)2, explained in a written statement. "The program is ideal for those accumulating their first experience in the field and for students looking for a future career in our profession."

"The Associate program is part of (ISC)2's commitment to serving the need of the information security professional throughout the career path of their choice," he continued.

Corrected 6/24/03: Previously, this story stated that Associates could use the title CISSP Associate or SSCP Associate. This was not correct. Associates are only allowed to use the moniker of Associate of (ISC)2; using the CISSP or SSCP moniker in any way before completing the entire certification process is forbidden. CertCities.com apologies for this error.

6/23/03: Moe Munee says: They want my money faster!
6/23/03: Anonymous says: That's good, at least not everyone who wants to jump into security field has 3 years experience in it. And I guess ICS has not gained enough profit from their cert programs due to the job requirement, unlike security-plus, CCSP or MS security which I believe have gained more popularity among exam takers, thus more peofit, than ICS exams. So, it's obvious that it's all about money
6/23/03: Mike from Oshawa, Ontario says: No doubt it's about the money. Just think of the multitude of Security wannabe's that don't have their four years in yet. Hell, I'm one of 'em. On that note, I'll pony up the $225 US and become an 'associate'. I'll just 'accidentally' forget to include the word 'associate' on my resume. Yeah, that's it. And another piece of paper for the 'I love me' wall, too.
6/24/03: Money from DC says: It's all about the GREEN!!
6/24/03: Anonymous says: ...because the GREEN is good. Who here doesn't like the GREEN? May I see a hand? No one? GOOD! Everyone likes it...
6/24/03: Anonymous says: That's okay, pass the exam, get the cert and resume can always be "nicely made", backed with the cert and some explanation on how well you know the stuff without having the 4yr experience yet. More importantly, get the cert first rather than having none.
6/24/03: Anonymous says: Mo' MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOney!
6/26/03: Anonymous says: POST REMOVED: C'mon, did you really think we'd leave that up? Please refrain from making such posts in the future.
6/25/03: Anonymous says: I am CISSP and I can say that it is very unlikely that someone without 4+ years experience will pass the exam, it is the hardest exam I've ever taken, no bootcamp can prepare you for that.
6/26/03: Anonymous says: You are the biggest liar I have seen. I have passed several exams without knowing about the subject. May be you are dull. Read materials that matter and practise a lot of questions as much as recent questions, sure 250 related questions must surface, and being a sharp person, you will identify answers. Sharpen up and stop discouraging people, or you are afraid many people are on their way to getting cissp? Get set, I am writing the next exam. Regards.
