Cisco Scores 500,000 Certification Mark

4/22/2003 -- Cisco Systems announced yesterday that the company awarded its 500,0000th certification in March.

The only other companies known to have reached the half-million mark in their IT certification programs are Microsoft and Novell.

Cisco declined to provide a breakdown of the count by titles, but did say that the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) community has grown to 9,500.

"The continuing growth and adoption of Cisco Career Certifications, particularly in security and IP telephony, is evidence of Cisco's preeminence in the networking industry and increasing confidence in the competence of certified professionals," Tom Kelly, vice president of Cisco's Internet Learning Solutions Group, said in a printed statement announcing the milestone. "For employers and network professionals alike, Cisco certifications are badges of expertise, aptitude and hands-on capability that is unparalleled in the industry."

Cisco launched the CCIE title in 1993, with the full program (associate, professional, and expert levels) debuting in 1998. Since then, the program has grown into seven Career certifications (plus several CCIE tracks) and 13 Certified Specialist titles. Aside from the lab-based CCIE, some of Cisco's most well known certifications include the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and the Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP).

Last year, CertCities.com's readers voted Cisco's certification program as the best IT certification program. Its CCIE title also topped CertCities.com's list of the 10 Hottest Certifications for 2003.

More information on Cisco's certifications can be found here. -B.N.

5/7/03: Mr. T from Hollywood, CA says: Just remember folks certification isn't the end all be all of getting a job. It's part of the package when trying to evaluate a prospective employee. Let's take for an example you have 2 candidates, both with 10 years networking experience, both interviewed well, but one has certifications? Now which one would you hire? Certification will help, but it's not everything. Also, just because you have 15 or more years of experience doesn't guarantee you job either. I know alot of old timers in that position who think they have job security, but a young guy with just enough experience and drive will soon replace them. Don't like it? Get off the treadmill because someone wants to run. One more thing I pity the foo sucka! Now give me my gold chains!
5/12/03: j from PR says: You can braindump the CCIE lab? Do you actually know (whoever the brain-dead Anonymous is) a 15-year old CCIE? Have you ever tried the CCIE exam? I'm sure all your answers are no, so, what the heck are you talking about? NO one book, bootcamp, or course is able to GUARANTEE passing the CCIE lab. This exam is by far the most difficult certification ever to obtain. There mere fact that after several years there are only 9,500 of them in the whole world (contrasted by over 350,000 MCSE's) says a lot about the CCIE program. ANYONE who says it can be easily passed with a braindump or by just reading a book or the documentation is either a big fat liar or is astoundingly ignorant. They don't have a clue of what they are talking about. Give it a try and then come back to post your opinion.
5/15/03: Anonymous says: The braindump is out there, still on sale, would you think no one has bought, tried, or succeeded using it? Why is it still on the hot products list at the TestKing? I've heard one used it and was happy, don't know if there's more...pressumably...yes!
5/16/03: Anonymous says: CCIE is no joke. Who here can implement a IPv6 network and the LAB is hands on baby!! Hope you have $1200 bucks to blow
5/16/03: Anonymous says: Hey if you want to get hands on experience, join the military. You can be in charge of a 3500 person network in 3 years with enough experience to get you a job paying 40-45k a year. It worked for me!!!
5/20/03: Anonymous says: Does it really matter if the certs are watered down? Get me out on a client site alongside a CCNP (and CCIE in a few cases), and I'll whup them.. (and yes I have lots of Cisco certs)...experience is key, bitching shows you are insecure in your knowledge.
5/22/03: Anonymous says: So Cisco has now made $75,000,000 just from exam testing fees, Congratulations Cisco.
5/23/03: Anonymous says: I know one CCIE who now hold 3 CCIEs. He said he used to braindump CCIE lab exam with all answers and explanation. Then he passed it to his 2 friends and they passed CCIE lab easily.
5/28/03: Anonymous says: i believe the ccie braindumper also believes he was once abducted by aliens
6/1/03: LindeySpear.com from ALABAMA says: You know I sat here and read all these comments, first of all CONGRATS on Cisco and the 500k mark. Now, I have worked in the field for YEARS and computers are my Hobby and have been since before most of you AOL people with certs came along. I agree 100% with HAZE from HAWAII and OTHER who have, like myself been into this field and then suddely see a HUGE drop in employment. Wanna know the reason? The simple truth is ( and the guys who have been in the filed WITH skill know this ) the reason the field has suffered such a HARD blow is EVERYONE who could turn on a computer JUMPED at the RIP off little TECHIE schools who offered certifications and what happened was you got ALOT of wanna be's flooding the market and giving the profession a BAD name because they would get the job because they had a cert(s) and SCREW it up. I have seen this MANY MANY times, HOWEVER I think most of the Vendors I.e CISCO, MICROSOFT ect.. are changing thier tests to reflect this influx of people who DONT belong in the IT filed. I have seen the tests for Microsoft and I AM SO GLAD that thet are HARDER in fact I saw where if you want a certification like MCSE you really have to have experiece. I have also started seeing the result of the industry change to "WEED" out these people, I have talked to at this time 8 people who have had the MCSE 4.0 and FAILED the 2k mcse, these are people who had no business being in the filed to begin with, I mean just becuase you crammed for a test and passed DOES NOT make you a IT Professional im sorry but IT DONT, and for you guys all I can say is do like the rest of us did, START out at the bottom and work your way up. As for the Cisco certifications, I hope they make them very hard or rather refect them in a test format to where the only way a person is goign to pass is if they KNOW and can TROUBLE shoot an issue, becuase peoplel who REALLy know there sh&@ trouble shoot all the time you have to , to do your job. I dont know if cisco will follow the others but I do know they need to start with WHO the license! Example, I just read todays paper and there is yet ANOTHER school here where I live and this one GUARANTEES a job when you finsh with them and get thier CCIE!! Well first of all they know that most of if not all of the student will drop out becuase face it, CCIE is a hard test if you say otherwise then you are a NEWBIE and those who REALLY are pros know this too. In fact yuou can read these messages and tell who is and who is not. Anyways this is to Cisco PLEASE CHECK THIS SCHOOL OUT web address aspreon.com is the address, they are here to do one thing, thats to take these peoples money off of your back cisco! they claim to give it all to you when you complete the course AND they say you dont even need to know computers!! comon cisco dont let these people do this as others will startup and do the same thing AGAIN. To you people who are IT pros HANG IN THERE!! We know computers are not going anywhere!! We just got to ride out this TECHIE NEWBIE thing and then the market I think will boom, in fact I have noticed that MOST of employers now are saying certs required and most all others say preferred! isnet that nice? So comon cisco do like microsoft is they now are releaseing 2003MCSE and its a bit#@!!
