Updated LPI Exams Go Live

4/2/2003 -- On Monday the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) launched new versions of its vendor-neutral LPIC Level 1 certification exams: 101 and 102.

The new exams, currently available only in English, are now being offered at Prometric and Pearson Vue testing centers worldwide. Japanese and German versions will debut shortly, LPI said.

Along with updated objectives, the revamped exams offer a new feature: candidates can choose to be tested on RPM or Debian package. "We have to provide IT professionals with a solid challenge to ensure their knowledge base mirrors todays reality, commented LPI President Evan Leibovitch. Because most professionals arent expected to know both management systems, our new exam closely copies their training programs and work experiences.

Candidates pick the package they wish to be tested on when beginning an exam, LPI said.

The exams debuted in beta format in November, when the previous versions were retired. The new exams will not affect those already LPIC Level 1 certified because LPI certification is valid for life. Either set can be used to move on to the organization's Level 2 certification, LPI said.

According to LPI, the organization has delivered more than 24,000 exams to date, and awarded more than 5,500 certifications worldwide.
