EC-Council Announces 'Ethical Hacker' Cert

3/19/2003 -- International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) announced recently that it is launching a new Ethical Hacker certification.

"Not all hackers are out to wreak havoc," the company wrote in a press release announcing the new credential. "There are ethical hackers who crack a system for the sheer challenge of doing so -- not to cause damage or destruction. In fact, they often lend a hand to system administrators by notifying them of the loopholes in their system."

Although the test earns one a title of "Ethical Hacker," the credential appears to be aimed more at system administrators who are trying to protect their networks from intruders. This is meant to be as a preemptive strike against any real or potential hacking attempt to any site as candidates are required to launch an attack on their own system, Jesse Andriese, certification manager of EC-Council, said in a prepared statement.

To become a certified Ethical Hacker, candidates must pass CEH exam #310-50, available at Prometric testing centers worldwide. The exam covers the standards and language involved in common exploits, vulnerabilities and countermeasures, and tests candidates knowledge in tools used by hackers in exposing common vulnerabilities as well as the those used by security professionals for implementing countermeasures, the company said.

EC-Council offers an optional five-day "Ethical Hacking & Countermeasures" training course to prepare candidates for the exam.

9/30/03: Your Mom from Your house says: A lot of people are missing the point here... Penetration testing is a "good idea", but how do you know who (a) has the skill, and (b) isn't going to just backdoor everything? This cert is intended to prove you have the technical know-how to at least know how to spell nmap. As for the ethics portion, it does eventually come down to trust... Where I work (as the hacker, BTW), lots of people want to have my job. But those who I'd trust don't have the skill, and those who have the skill are not really trustworthy, and I don't have time to train someone else. So, this cert - in conjunction with a CISSP - would be helpful if we were hiring someone (which we aren't, so don't bother).
10/7/03: Surbacean from Out there says: The comments regarding the value of a pen testers certification to his customer is very valid. Ethical hacking is notorius for being a "dark art" and many folk buy security assessments without asking whether the tester is capable of delivering a product that is to an acceptable standard. The question we should be asking is "How trustworthy is EC-Council as a certification body?" - the last thing a customer needs is a certified tester who is the same as the proverbial "paper MCSE"
11/2/03: M. Satish Kini from Bangalore, India says: Iam going to take this !! and see...
11/2/03: valmont says: it's gd to know the fundamentals.. but use it with maturity.. though info is always in our faces.. but.. mindset is something to understand abt..
2/15/04: Waseem Lalani from India says: I am very much intrested to become a hacker can u help me. My name is Waseen Lalani and i am undergraduate student. I am Microsoft and Cisco certified syatem engineer and i know only something about hacking. I know how 2 hack systems in LAN using net bus, etc
2/16/04: l337 from in your router says: net bus? this is a new way to hack to me. You might been of thinking on NetBios. Im going for that cert, the only problem is, for how long is this cert valid? Hacking changes everyday, new exploits, new version of servers and stuff. What about EC-Council? is it trustable as a company to give certifications? Also lots of technics are obsolete. Personal experience.
2/20/04: Anonymous says: I totally agree with anonymous: MUH-UHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
2/19/04: unbind from quebec says: CEH seems to be a good entry point to the industry providing good -basic- skills and combined with the CISSP it might be a plus on your CV. Its not about hacking anyways, its about cracking. And its not about making you a -hacker- more than it is about making you aware and giving you solid basic skills. Its all about attitude and competence anyways.
3/11/04: ramesh from bangalore says: any training centres in Bangalore for "certified ethical Hacker course"
4/1/04: Ashish Dabral from Dehradun, Uttranchal, India says: Its great ! Certified hacker is like a police man who know the loopholes and also know that how to cover them... A network engineer of administrator must do this....
