EC-Council Announces 'Ethical Hacker' Cert

3/19/2003 -- International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) announced recently that it is launching a new Ethical Hacker certification.

"Not all hackers are out to wreak havoc," the company wrote in a press release announcing the new credential. "There are ethical hackers who crack a system for the sheer challenge of doing so -- not to cause damage or destruction. In fact, they often lend a hand to system administrators by notifying them of the loopholes in their system."

Although the test earns one a title of "Ethical Hacker," the credential appears to be aimed more at system administrators who are trying to protect their networks from intruders. This is meant to be as a preemptive strike against any real or potential hacking attempt to any site as candidates are required to launch an attack on their own system, Jesse Andriese, certification manager of EC-Council, said in a prepared statement.

To become a certified Ethical Hacker, candidates must pass CEH exam #310-50, available at Prometric testing centers worldwide. The exam covers the standards and language involved in common exploits, vulnerabilities and countermeasures, and tests candidates knowledge in tools used by hackers in exposing common vulnerabilities as well as the those used by security professionals for implementing countermeasures, the company said.

EC-Council offers an optional five-day "Ethical Hacking & Countermeasures" training course to prepare candidates for the exam.

3/19/03: Anonymous from Ont, Can says: Just when I thought the cert industry couldn't get any stupider... ethical hacking??? I think I'll get this cert, just so I can be taught 'legally' how to be a hacker. And hell, what measures are in place to ensure that once I've received my 'ethical hacker' label, that I stay ethical??? I think I'd be embarrassed to list this cert on my resume.
3/19/03: Anonymous says: Just what the world needs another cert. Gee, who'll pay for "CCP" (Certified Clog Plumber).

3/20/03: Dirken says: Incredible ! I thought all loopholes for making money out of nothing had already been exploited, especially in IT Cert business - now I've been proved wrong. Yet, let's wait how many are dumb enough to fall into that pit. By the way, what will the recertification schedule be? Cert valid for what- 1 month? At least, a good laugh for everybody !!!
3/20/03: Joseph Lee from Ann Arbor says: Wow! I love the idea of Ethical Hacking certification. I have passed my CISSP. The CISSP knowledge was good and helped my to understand overall security knowledge. What I lacked was technical vulnerability assessment skills. The CEH will add credibility towards my security portfolio. I am definetly going to take this up. My company has approved this course. :-)
3/20/03: Esjay from Everywhere says: I always think positive even when it cost me. The CEH exam will not only provide a way for your curiousity but certianly a way to become dangerous. If you sign the CEH Guide, it will hold you to what you agree with the Ethical document. Do you want to go against your agreement! Well if you think positive, it will enhance your knowledge to show you can help where needed in this emerging World.
3/20/03: Rama says: Very interesting!
3/21/03: AD from Anywhere I want says: I'm not sure whom is more foolish: the fool who thinks they can become an Ethical Hacker by taking (and paying for) a test, or the fool that would hire said Ethical Hacker.
3/21/03: Anonymous says: Certification industry is getting smarter and moving into more diverse qualification. CEH title seems to address the "darker side" of security skills, huge plus for security professionals. Instead of focussing on the same old MCSE, CCNA etc. it is about time we welcome certifications that target more practical and addresses the serious security problems. Who is foolish? the ones who goofs up their security in their companies because they refuse to understand the hacker technologies or the smarter ones who has the skills to tackle any hacker attack. I have the following qualifications MCSE, Security+, CISSP, MCSA,MCSD,CCNA but none of these certifications tests on hacker methodologies or the hacking tools. It is great to see someone who can view security in a different angle.
3/23/03: andrew from usa says: Who are they to give the "official seal" of an ethical hacker? You don't learn it in a classroom, you learn through years of tinkering and curiosity.
