CIW No Longer for Sale

12/18/2002 -- According to Jim Stapleton, head of investor relations for ProsoftTraining, the company is no longer looking for a buyer for its assets.

Stapleton told CertCities.com yesterday that Prosoft, which owns and runs the Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) certification program, realized that the strategy to sell the company's assets would not work after negotiating with "several" potential buyers, whom he declined to name. He said that because of the depressed market, the company could not get an asking price that would "return enough value to shareholders."

"I think that if the parties were willing to [pay more], we would have gone through with the sale," he explained. "We feel we can bring more value to our shareholders by cutting costs and growing sales in an effort to return to profitability."

This new strategy is led by new Chairman and CEO Robert G. Gwin. Gwin, who previously served as Prosoft's president and CFO, replaces Jerry Baird, who resigned last week. Baird served as Prosoft's CEO since June 1997.

In its latest quarterly SEC filing, the company said it now has enough cash to continue through the third quarter of its 2003 fiscal year, which ends March 31. Previously, the company said that it only had enough cash to continue through December of this year.

In a conference call regarding its Q1 results filed last Friday, Gwin said this improved cash position was due to increased cost savings. Gwin said that the company plans to further improve its bottom line through layoffs and and consolidating office locations, as well as increased focus on the educational market.

Gwin also said that it's his goal to return to the company to profitability by June 2003. -B.N.

12/19/02: Anonymous says: Man, this is one very depressed market.
12/19/02: Peter from Canada says: Thats GOOD NEWS BUT STILL PROSOFT (CIW) HAS TO IMPROVE LOTS OF THINGS LIKE: 1. Improve the paper Quality of Certification (VERY IMPORTANT) 2. There must be a transcript site from where candidate can validate their score reports /certifications. 3. it should not be a book company only. 4. CIW (PROSOFT) must include a lapel pin in certifcation welcome kit. 5.CIW (PROSOFT) must include a wallet card in certification welcome kit like microsoft cisco etc. 6. UPDATE YOUR COURSES.
12/19/02: Kevin from Portland, OR says: Yes, obviously the inclusion of a lapel pin will improve their bottom line, as well as, improved paper quality. Some of that antique looking stuff would be nice. Personally I stuff all my certs in a file folder and really don't care. Regards.
12/20/02: David from Sudbury, MA says: I think that certs are largely a retail proposition. Companies value certs to varying degrees but there is no external pressure to mandate them. If, on the other hand, there was regulatory pressure then the certs would have a tangible rather than a perceived value. In any case, I don't think that there will ever be a regulatory requirement. Instead, I think that as long as the job market is soft and income is tight retail customers will rarely appear at the door of companies whose bread and butter is bsed on getting certified.
12/24/02: Anonymous says: In other words, no one wants to buy this lemon of a cert. company!
12/24/02: Mohd. Jameel from Cairo says: It looks like nobody wants to buy this crappy company with worthless certification. Poor shareholders still hanging on to this losing company. The CIW certification is the laughing joke in my country. I run training center in Cairo and whenever I mention about CIW I get good laughs from my student as worthless piece of crap. Prosoft, please dump CIW nonsense and start focussing on 'REAL' and 'PRACTICAL' education. There is no such thing called 'vendor neutral' web master. You are either expert on IIS and-or Apache. What you are portraying is jack of all trades equalling nothing. Remember you are no Microsoft or Cisco.
12/30/02: Jim Adcock from Austin TX says: Well, I am glad they are going to be around for a littlr longer. While a few goodie bag items and nicer paper for the certificate would be nice, they in no way enhances the company's bottom line, or mine. I dont get certs because of the cracker jack toys... and I really don't get the certs because they show off that I know stuff (though that is part of it). I get certs because they demonstrate that, while I have been on this career path for only a few years, I learn QUICKLY and can adapt to any technology thrown at me in short order. I'm not looking to be a jack-of-all-trades (and master of none)... instead I want to be the guy that, no matter what my employers throw at me, I can master it and produce re$ults. As I wrote elsewhere ( LINK REMOVED -- TOO LONG. SORRY! ) several certs can be acquired for the price of two exams for MCSE certified people with the right mix of MS exams. And finally, when the potential employer comes down to making the final choice between you and the other guy, in this tough market you need every advantage you can get. As far as vendor neutral, there is no such thing as a "vendor neutral" network, but that doesn't stop MS from recognizing the value of vendor neutral A plus, Network plus and Server plus certs for earning the MCSA. And if __MS of all companies can recognize the value of vendor neutral....
12/27/02: Bobby from Brooklyn NY says: Prosoft needs to improve the value of the CIW series, including som sort of recertification. If the recertification is handled properly AND the alue is increased, the recertification process in itself could generate a revenue stream.
12/27/02: Felipe from Los Angeles says: I am so glad to know I did not pay for my CIW but my heart goes out to those who paid good money for a worthless paper cert. The COMPTIA, Microsoft, RedHat and Cisco have far more weight and reputation than the poorly implemented ProSoft CIW program. I know since I worked at New Horizons CLC and trained people who were paying thousands of dollars for a cert to prove they had web skills. Stuff you could do and learn on your own.
12/30/02: Anonymous says: Please recommend a web cert program that does have value in the workplace; email privately if necessary
