Microsoft Changes Plans for .NET Server MCSE and MCSA

12/4/2002 -- MCPMag.com reported Tuesday that Microsoft has decided to restructure its certification offerings for Windows .NET Server 2003. The changes encompass upgrade exams and a retooling of the way that the MCSE and MCSA credentials tie together.

Microsoft has decided to back away from the mix-and-match strategy it first announced in January (see "Windows .NET Exams in Pipeline"). At that time, the company said candidates could take both Windows 2000 and .NET exams toward the MCSE or MCSA titles. Now, the certification group has decided to eliminate that and simply offer upgrade exams for those holding Win2K credentials.

Dan Truax, Director of Microsoft Certification Business & Product Strategy, told MCPMag.com: "Now, if you're an MCSA on Windows 2000, when we release the .NET track, you'll likely take one exam, assuming your elective carries over. For MCSE, again assuming your electives carry over and still count, you will probably take one or two exams at most."

Truax said that unlike 70-240, the four-hour accelerated exam for moving to the Win2K MCSE, these tests will be about the same length as the regular exams. "Our plan right now is to make them as close to a normal exam time as possible, which is why you need to be at that credential level on Win2K — because they build on that knowledge." At the same time, he said, "The reason we're able to do the upgrade exams is because there's still a lot of similarities [between Win2K and .NET]."

The new MCSA title will be available in the summer timeframe, Truax predicted. He expected beta exams to begin in springtime. The MCSE title will be available in the fall. This follows the schedule first announced in June (see "Windows .NET Server Exams: Spring or Summer 2003?" ). The .NET product line itself is expected to be widely available in April.

12/16/02: Anonymous says: You mean someones opinion about the truth about this.
12/19/02: Anonymous says: The MCSE is still a very credible credential. However if some people buy $100 worth of brain dumps and pass the exams based only on those braindumps then that is on them. There will always be people that want to make money selling what is probably one of the most popular certification programs out there. The credibility is partially Microsoft's fault. Why is it that Cisco and Novell include simulations and Microsoft does not? Also why is it that on some MCSE exams you are tested on routing with a 2000server box? who in corporate america would use a 2000 server box as a router instead of the hardware?? Besides we have to continue to update ourselves. Its never going to be a get MCSE in 2000 and your all done. You may be done with the tests for 6-9 months but thats it. The credential still has plenty of value but those can those holding it prove themselves ? It is all about what you get out of it. Same thing with CCNA or CNE, if you know Windows well and are MCSE more power to you. If you dumped everything then you aren't gonna make it anywhere.
12/19/02: Anonymous says: Money talks, anyone who thinks otherwise is naïve!
12/21/02: Bill Gates from Seattle says: Hi all, Just wanted to say with the economy the way it is I need to bring in $$$ anyway I can. What till you see what I have in store for you after .net :) You will have to be testing every month just to keep up, and I will be having a solid revenue stream from all ya sucker's ( I mean MCSE's), Thanks Bill
12/22/02: david says: Now I dont even tell my friends that I am a MCSE. And I will never upgrade to .NET----no use, guys!
12/30/02: Anonymous says: DOS and OS2 are the paths to the future. Dust off the old books, brush up on them, lest you be left behind.
12/30/02: MuffyMuff from California says: I think instead of concentrating on these certs for now, I'll go and get a Master's Degree. Eventually, the time will come that I may need to get one, but I'll make sure that if I decided to do such a thin, I'll go focus on the product when Microsoft releases its Release Candidate 1 of their Windows .NET 2007 family of products. I'll still keep my MCSD current though since I've been at it since the crow turned black for the first time.
1/2/03: Anonymous says: Really is there any need for taking MCSE exams anymore. I know people who are qualified MCSE but cannot install any of the Microsoft products. Any exams that you can easily cheat on is not worth the money. I suggest Microsoft concentrates on enhancing its exams credibility or contract Redhat Linux to administer their exams.
1/3/03: Anonymous says: why would Redhat administer microsofts exams. microsoft blows.
