CompTIA May Take Network+ Adaptive, Update A+

10/23/2002 -- Tancy Stanbery, certification program manager for the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), told CertCities.com yesterday that the company is evaluating its Network+ exam for adaptive format.

CompTIA had stated on its Web site that the adaptive version of the Network+ exam would be released in December, but then it quickly pulled that information from the Web site. Stanbery said that the decision to make Network+ adaptive is still under consideration. "It's a time consuming processes [to take an exam adaptive]," she explained. "We're not sure yet if we want to commit to that."

The adaptive format is a testing method in which the number of questions that appear on an exam is determined by a tester's answers during the exam, with right answers given more weight than wrong answers in the final test score. CompTIA is one of a handful of certification providers who use adaptive testing for some exams in order to limit question exposure.

CompTIA also pulled information that stated that it would release new A+ and Network+ objectives in January.

Stanbery told CertCities.com that the Network+ objective information is false -- there is no objectives changed scheduled for that exam.

She said that a revision of the A+ objectives is currently being evaluated, but a final decision won't be made until later this year. She said that, if needed, new objectives would be released in the February 2003 time frame, with the exam to follow approximately six months later.

A CompTIA spokesperson blamed the misinformation on the launch of its newly redesigned Web site and said that the section would reappear shortly with corrected information.

CompTIA's Web site can be found at http://www.comptia.org.

12/26/02: Anonymous from New Hampshire says: I THINK that ALL test that are Upgraded Like the A-Plus test SHOULD BE RENEWED . I am going to be taking mine soon. BUT only because I have to. WHAT good is it? I know people who took the A-Plus test When 486'and Pentium Rocked the world, Before Pentium 2,3, and 4, before AMD and 168 DIM's before PCI before AGP. well You get the jist. SO much changes in the industery. WHAT good is it if you don't keep it up to date? every 3 years at a Renewal Rate like $50.00 to keep your certificate would be fine with me. WHY should someone who took the test 7 years ago. and hasn't used it GET a job over me who has been doing it for OVER 20 years?? I have helped at least 4 people who were aPlus certified fix problems within 2 minutes because they had know clue how to do it.
12/26/02: Frank D. from New Hampshire. says: I hear ya. been there. and feel the same way. I know a few guys I work with who are NOT Aplus Cert. But they can run circles around a few guys I know who are! go figure..
1/1/03: Anonymous from New Zealand says: Stop complaining! You know I live in New Zealand where I had to pay $590 for the A-plus and $435 for Network-plus, this is heaps for an 18 year old. The good thing about comptia is your certification are yours for lifetime. Better than Microsoft where you have to udate your exams every 2 years. I guess I will have to do that as well since I want MCSA and MCSE
5/20/03: Anonymous from From Alabama says: I have to make this comment- I hold a U.S. Federal Communications Commission Radiotelephone Operators License. When I first recieved it, I had to renew it every five years.(precomputer days!) Then they issued me a lifetime license- the only thing they do now is contact other federal agencies, to find out where I am working. There are certain illegal activities that because I hold a federal license, gets me in deeper if I ever were involved in those particular activities, which of course, I avoid. There are certain things that you can do, and certain things that you should avoid doing with just about any kind of knowledge- that is why certification is important- it is true that there are many people in many occupations that require licenses, certifications, and permits, and some of them make us ask "how did he or she qualify?" Some of us are just good test takers. Application of the aquired sometimes doesn't match that which is required! r
10/10/03: ambiso from Virginia says: Well designed adaptive exams mimic real life test situations
