Police Seize Assets of TestKiller.com

7/10/2002 -- On June 6 San Antonio police seized assets of TestKiller Ltd., the company that runs the practice exam Web site TestKiller.com.

According to a police report filed with the Bexar County, Texas District Court on June 20, the raid was prompted by Microsoft, who alleged that the site was selling Microsoft certification exam questions.

In his affidavit, seizing police officer Daniel Flaharty, a detective in the Special Crimes Unit of the San Antonio Police Department, wrote that he was contacted by a representative from the anti-piracy office of Microsoft. The unnamed representative alleged to Flaharty that TestKiller Ltd. was selling Microsoft "trade secrets" in the form of questions and answers to Microsoft exams.

According to the report, Flaharty began an investigation based on Microsoft's complaint, which led to the June 6 seizure of $408,566.84 in cash as well as several phones, printers, computer equipment, software and other items from at least one location.

No charges have been filed in this investigation. Calls made to the Bexar County district attorney's office to determine whether the investigation was ongoing were not returned as of press time.

Garry L. Neale, one of Testkiller Ltd.'s owners, politely declined CertCities.com's request for an interview, referring all questions to his attorney, who is out of the country this week.

A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed that the company was aware of the investigation but said he could not comment on it due to the legal nature of the story.

The Testkiller.com Web site has been offline since early June.

Neale is the former owner of Troy Technologies (TroyTec.com), which in December settled a civil copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit brought by certification vendor CompTIA (see "CompTIA v. TroyTec Settled; Company Pulls CompTIA-Related Products from Site, Denies Wrongdoing").

CertCities.com will continue to follow this story and bring you further updates as they develop. -B.N.

7/12/02: Anonymous says: I'm honestly not believing what I'm reading here. The MOC isn't meant to help you pass, it's to introduce you to the concepts. You should THEN go about reading 3, 4, maybe 5 or 6 books for each test to pass your exam. Do this 7 times and you're and MCSE... for a while. Maybe you people were born with a silver spoon in your mouths, but a good portion of us have jobs and stand to get promotions by getting certified. I'm pretty neutral on braindumps, mainly because I think almost every vendor out there sells braindumps. Their goal is to get as close to the real question as possible, and all the "high and mighty" people here think that's better than getting the same stuff (not exact questions) from a briandump site at WORSE quality. Braindumps have wrong answers, are memorized wrong, etc. etc. etc. Again though, it's all about money, these people complaining obviously have lots of it and plenty of spare time to buy all the books and materials (vendors that sell the real questions but are Microsoft approved so they're ok because Microsoft is getting a cut) they need to pass. Oh, and jsprague, us old timers remember that you used to run a braindump site... to quote you "Unfortunately, most people know this, but are so morally vacant that they just don't care"... let me guess, you're a born again moralist? When will you people learn that it's all about money?
7/12/02: Aha Aha says: Face the truth, you will not pass based on testkiller alone,ie without studing. Anyone know about a good dump?
7/12/02: Anonymous says: What about the "Bootcamps" where folks get their MCSE in 10-14 days? Are you telling me that they "learned" everything in that short period of time. Seems like they should be investigated!
7/12/02: Anonymous says: I am an MCT for a quality training school. I do not recommend dumps of any kind, however,if you were to study from the MOC 2152 (Professional and Server Course by Microsoft)you would surely fail both exams. If you were to purchase MSPress 70-210 which claims (will prepare you for the professional exam, you would surely fail using this material alone. Microsoft books do not prepare you for the exams. In addition, I am an ex-MIS Manager for over 10 years with 20 years in the field. I also own my own consulting company and can tell you many real life scenarios may not prepare you for the exams either. A person hired as an desktop specialist may never get exposed to server work. Thank you for listening This is why companies have sprung up and people utilize dumps.
7/12/02: Anonymous says: OK, how do you prep for a exam? I for one do not like a surprise when I have studied my butt off to find the rabbit punch questions that Microsoft puts on the exams. I know for a fact that the people at Microsoft have test killers on their laptops and use them. Bottom line is to get the education you need to perform and to pass the test one must study for the test not just the material. I have spent thousands of dollars on my education over the last 2 years and I believe that Microsoft needs to revamp the way they write the tests. If you want a answer to a problem do not hit me from the back side and beat around the bush. Give it to me up front! Currently I do not believe that the tests are a true measure of one's knowledge. All in all if you cheat you cheat yourself. Is your goal to be a MCSE or is it to be a network administrator. You can cheat to become one but not the other.
7/12/02: Anonymous says: I think that based on what I am reading, you should all run out and take a few English classes. Forget about the IT stuff, you cannot even convey your thoughts in basic sentences! I guess this is the result of all those cryptic variable names you have to come up with!
7/12/02: LoDogg says: Come on!! You have troytec to help you with the exams and same with the brain dumps! The exams are very hard. And you neeed extra study material so what if you earn your MCSE one way or another you will have to back your knowledge through your performance at work. Just getting the paper is not good enough you have to know how to use windows 2000 workstation and server inside and out. Everyone has freedom in this country let's keep it that way!!!! And yes I have my MCSE:) Thanks
7/12/02: Jclaude8 from Midwest says: For Tim on 7-11: I have been in this industry for over 5 years now. And let me tell you, I'm no idiot as you say. I have worked with the full suite of Microsoft products and to try to study with the conventional tools is useless. There's not enough study help. If you take the Testkiller and another company like Transcenders and put them to GOOD use (such as using them for a study guide and then test the explanations); i see no difference than say the sybex study guides. If you memorize the braindumps; that is where i also have a problem. So Tim, which idiot are you?
7/12/02: Long Time MCT says: A couple things. First of all to the person who brought up the doctor example. How many years do doctorssurgeons INTERN with ANOTHER DOCTOR WATCHING AND APPROVING EVERY STEP getting REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE before they can practice on their own? Thats no different than taking a MOC class then getting real world experience before certifying. Secondly to all those people who are bitching about MS (or other companies) wanting to make money. I suppose you donate all the money from your paychecks over and above what you need to pay your bills to the poor and needy. I suppose you don't have any savings, emergency money or retirement fund? Because if you do then you have no right bitching about any company trying to make money.
7/12/02: Anonymous says: The people praising the action against Testkiller are a bunch of idiots.
