Police Seize Assets of TestKiller.com

7/10/2002 -- On June 6 San Antonio police seized assets of TestKiller Ltd., the company that runs the practice exam Web site TestKiller.com.

According to a police report filed with the Bexar County, Texas District Court on June 20, the raid was prompted by Microsoft, who alleged that the site was selling Microsoft certification exam questions.

In his affidavit, seizing police officer Daniel Flaharty, a detective in the Special Crimes Unit of the San Antonio Police Department, wrote that he was contacted by a representative from the anti-piracy office of Microsoft. The unnamed representative alleged to Flaharty that TestKiller Ltd. was selling Microsoft "trade secrets" in the form of questions and answers to Microsoft exams.

According to the report, Flaharty began an investigation based on Microsoft's complaint, which led to the June 6 seizure of $408,566.84 in cash as well as several phones, printers, computer equipment, software and other items from at least one location.

No charges have been filed in this investigation. Calls made to the Bexar County district attorney's office to determine whether the investigation was ongoing were not returned as of press time.

Garry L. Neale, one of Testkiller Ltd.'s owners, politely declined CertCities.com's request for an interview, referring all questions to his attorney, who is out of the country this week.

A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed that the company was aware of the investigation but said he could not comment on it due to the legal nature of the story.

The Testkiller.com Web site has been offline since early June.

Neale is the former owner of Troy Technologies (TroyTec.com), which in December settled a civil copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit brought by certification vendor CompTIA (see "CompTIA v. TroyTec Settled; Company Pulls CompTIA-Related Products from Site, Denies Wrongdoing").

CertCities.com will continue to follow this story and bring you further updates as they develop. -B.N.

12/23/02: Melanie from Texas says: I don't think that testkiller.com is the only website out there doing this. It is hilarious that a company as big as Microsoft is afraid of a little ole test prep company like troytec. Do they really think that people are able to pass their almost impossible to pass exams by just using these guides? I wish that my company would use someone like Java or equivalent. If it was up to me I would boycott using ANY microsoft product. They have monopolized the computer software industry and continue to do so by pressing charges against these small companies like troytec. MICROSOFT GET A LIFE!!!!!! I will attempt my JAVA certifications instead of your petty certifications. YOU SUCK!!!!!!!
12/31/02: Michael from Chicago, IL says: I am posting this information just to hit the new years eve. it is Dec, 31 2002. and it is new years eve, May god forgive the people who stole the certification exam from the testing centers, and may god help the unemployed to get employed. I truly pray that we all live in peace, and be fogiving to each other.
1/5/03: Ryan from UK says: After reading a lot of the comments I am quite shocked that you can get the word for word questions and answers for the MCSE exams as well as others. I attained mine through study. I admit though I would have probably looked at these braindump sites after study to test my skills. The thing is surely Microsoft has changed the questions and answers since closing down Testkiller-Troytec or are they very lazy in changing the questions? If so, they have themselves to blame. People WILL cheat (horribly sad but true) if given the opportunity
1/13/03: Cous from France says: I have paid but I cannot login do you have a solution. I buy it in examsheets.com
1/29/03: benny says: ALl those sites are a**holes
2/10/03: Anon says: Interesting how you people in here bash these study guides. When Microsoft actually has them in there library for their own people to study with. How do I know this? I used to work there...
2/23/03: Anonymous says: on june 20 they seized all of troytec shit, but then it goes on to say they have not been charged with anything. What i want to know is how that is legal. i hope troytec sues the crap out of microsoft and then they wont have to work again.
3/30/03: microsoft guru from us says: All BS, quit raging about the guides. It ain't Microsoft's problem you are in your infancy of your career. Buy a book, donate your time to a church or non-profit organization and get some skills. Certs mean nothing to an employer without experience. Microsoft has moved this industry farther in the last 10 years than the Unix/Linux/novell world has in the last 30. If they are so bad why you trying to certify on their product? Microsoft is trying to keep some integrity in their certification program, hence shutting down cheat sites.
7/30/03: Jwamble from Dallas says: Exactly how many times have people who self study for certs found typos that cause you to fail because your books test were WRONG!!,,even the comptia and microsoft books who make the test have wrong answers in their material.
8/28/03: Anonymous says: I've used Troytec's all through my NT4 cert up through my Win2k certs, not having to spend another $8,000 on a year program of more dry MOC material. Where'd it get me? A sweet job, where I could get all the hands on I want to learn everything that I could've with MOC's, and I'm in the process of starting my own business. A cert just paper, no matter how you get it. It's what you know with or without the damn thing that matters.
