CISSP To Require Endorsement

5/15/2002 -- Beginning June 1, the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) will require everyone who passes its Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam to submit an endorsement from an employer or certified colleague verifying the candidate's experience in the field.

ISC2 said it implemented the new policy to "...Differentiate the CISSP from other information security certifications by ensuring the experience requirement is upheld," ISC2 said.

The CISSP is a high-level security certification that requires candidates to have three years of "direct, full-time security" experience.

The recommendation is required. "After the examination has been scored and receives a passing grade, a notification letter is sent advising the candidate of his/her status," ISC2 states on its Web site. "The candidate has 90 days from the date of the letter to submit an endorsement form. If the endorsement form is not received before the 90-day period expires, the application will be voided and the candidate must resubmit to the entire process."

ISC2 also announced that it will also begin auditing new candidates:"A percentage of the candidates who pass the examination and submit endorsements will be randomly subjected to audit and will be required to submit a resume for formal review and investigation."

9/21/02: CISSPs from Hong Kong from Hong Kong says: ISC2 must start auditing both old and new candidates very soon. There are many paper certificates issued. The candidate can easily to establish an infosec company. Once the candidate passed CISSP exam, the candidate could pretend to be the candidate's boss for signing the endorsement. This is possible and must be audit immediately. Furthermore, ISC2 must inform and educate the candidate's employer/boss and all CISSPs to sign the endorsement carefully. Otherwise, all effort made by ISC2 will be wasted!! This is to protect the professional and maintain a high standard of CISSP around the world.
1/31/03: anonymous CISSP from Atlanta, GA says: I agree with some of what people have said, The CISSP is just proof that you know INFOSEC. For me it just confirms that I have sufficient knowledge from the experience I've gained in working in IT. No I wouldn't recommend going for the CISSP for a new commer to IT and/or INFOSEC. Even if you passed the exam through studying. When it comes time to do something with it in the job you got, chances are you'll have a tough time. Start out with Certs like Security+, you'll be better prepared and will gain knowledge quickly. For those who thinks it a fast track to big bucks. Well you'll find out the truth from the Hype.
8/27/03: walterbyrd from denver says: My problem is, I can't really know if my experience is acceptable until -after- I take the exam. I think my experience would be acceptable, I don't see why not. but I wish I could make sure. ICS2 wants me to be endorsed by a CISSP. I have done security work - but my boss was not a CISSP will ICS2 accept that? Maybe or maybe not. ICS2 is characteristicly vauge about that. Also the endorser is supposed to verify that I do meet ICS2 requirements to take the exam. Again, if my boss is not a CISSP, he may feel uneasy about verifying that.
