Exam Cram Publisher Goes Under

4/3/2002 -- Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Coriolis LLC, publisher of the Exam Cram certification study guides as well as other IT books, was dissolved last week by its majority owner, Haights Cross.

All but three of Coriolis' 50 employees were let go Thursday, and the company is looking to sell all Coriolis "assets and intelectual property," a spokesperson for Haights Cross told CertCities.com.

The closure is due to poor financials, the spokesperson said, and the decision was made after an extended search for a buyer failed.

As of press time, neither of the company's Web sites -- Coriolis.com or ExamCram.com -- make any mention of the shut down, although the Coriolis home page is currently promoting a "Spring Sale," in which all of its products are 75 percent off through most of April.

The closure came as a blow to many of the publisher's writers. One author, Barry Shilmover, told CertCities.com that despite having written seven books for the company, he still hasn't had any formal contact from Coriolis about the shut-down or the status of his royalty payments or copyrights. "I found out through a friend," he said. "It's very frustrating...but I'm not as bad off as some other authors."

Although Shilmover has not yet been contacted, it appears that other authors have. Through sources, CertCities.com obtained a copy of an author release that was sent to at least one Coriolis writer. In it, the company agreed to pay 20 percent of what the author is owed in exchange for release of liability, a promise not to sue and other conditions.

Shilmover told CertCities.com that there's a lot of confusion out there among Coriolis writers, tech editors and other freelancers: "What's happpened is that a lot of people are hearing a lot of different things, or are being told different things...."

In fact, Shilmover said that several authors who are owed money and/or would like the copyrights to their books so they can publish them elsewhere have come together in a loose coalition to share information and ideas. "What we really need to do is get the story straight," he said."If we can get more authors, maybe we can better figure out what's going on." Shilmover said that anyone interested in participating in the group's mailing list can e-mail him at .

4/8/02: Neil from Ohio says: I used exam prep for both A+ and Net+. I used them with other books. I found no grammer mistakes in the exam prep unlike other books I have read. Some of the material in the exam cram is organized in a way that is confusing but all in all a good book to learn from. I will keep the ones I have for a reference. I hope some other company picks up where they left off and continues the process.
4/9/02: tech trainer from Chicago, IL says: there is another series that looks pretty similar to examcram and covers mcse, a+, network+, ccna, java, etc. Search amazon for 'passport' and there are a handful of cheap and small tech cert books that come up. seem to be getting good reviews. remains to be seen if people like them as much as the cram books.
4/9/02: Michael says: As an author who gots affected by this incident, I can tell you that the hard work I spent months to complete get me nothing in return. I wrote half of the chapters of a to be published books for Coriolis, and now I lose both the rights to my works and the money. The work agreement I have on this deal is with an agent. The agent in this case claims he has no responsiiblity on the issue, and threaten to stop acting as my agent if I go ahead with legal actions against him. Michael
4/10/02: Duffy Waldorf Jnr III (The Third) from LA says: Gee, this is bad news. Those books were real handy small sized guides which cut out the microsoft jargon and got straight to the point. A sad day indeed.........
4/10/02: Randy from Baton Rouge, LA, USA says: Great news! These ExamCram, books were just braindumps in print. When I noticed one of their books in the bookstore (LPI 101), it actually encouraged people to surf the net looking for other braindumps to help people pass the exam. The books were basically garbage used to get people with no experience certified. For the entry level certs that might be OK, but for MCSE or CCNP or CNE, it is not acceptable. Let's hope noone replaces them anytime soon.
4/10/02: MrGone, Computer Tech @ large from somewhere in the U.S. says: Oz...you hit it right on the money. I have been so tired of the diluted market that I have been forced into unrelated verticle market to make ends meet. These "dump heads" have ruined the biz. No offense, if you learned via an exam cram and grew past it...kudos to you! I would almost like to say that publishers that offer an easy cert are just as bad as the old time miracle cure salesmen from the old west. Maybe some would disagree, I'm sticking to my guns on this one.
4/10/02: Anonymous says: Unfortunately, they didn't just make the Exam Cram books. I like their programming Black Books, so I will definitely miss those. I did save my company some money because we were just about to buy several of them locally.
4/10/02: Michael says: In fact Coriolis does NOT only publish examcram books, it publishes other tech books as well. The book I wrote for Coriolis was not an exam one. Still, got burnt totally this time.
4/10/02: Terry Werner from LA says: Reflection of our current business environment, I also thing the confusion cause my Microsoft with .NET, and XP training are hurting publication companies and educational providers.
4/11/02: Patrick says: A week has passed by and no books have arrived despite the astronomical delivery charge and my credit card being debited...
