New Security Track for CCIE

2/28/2002 -- A year ago, Cisco announced a security-focused Qualified Specialist certificate as an add-on to its core titles. Now, security is a full-fledged option for CCIE candidates.

Cisco announced the new security track for its highly coveted, lab-exam-based title last week. "As a leader in the security industry, Cisco is offering security certifications that are evolving in step with what the market and our customers are demanding," Tom Kelly, vice president of Cisco's Internet learning group, said in a printed statement.

According to Cisco, CCIE Security "emphasizes a broad range of security-related technologies in addition to the traditional CCIE focus on core IP routing and switching."

As with the other CCIE tracks -- CCIE Routing and Switching and CCIE Communications and Services -- hopefuls must first pass a multiple-choice qualification exam (#350-018 for the Security track) before being allowed to sit for the one-day lab exam.

Cisco said in the statement that it began beta testing the title in Fall 2001. Although the company emphasized its "total solution" approach to network security in its press release announcement, no word was given on what, if any, other security titles may be forthcoming.

3/1/02: Anonymous says: So what? Another certification that is at too high a level and too expensive for most to ever really achieve. Besides, router-based encryption sucks.
3/4/02: Matt from Oz says: Anonymous - High level certs are for those you love their job to such a degree that it is no longer a job, but a way of life. Go and spend your time fishing, or pulling the pud, whatever you like doing best!
3/26/02: Randy from Plano, Texas says: I would have too, although not completely, agree with Matt. I am already working on the CCIE R&S Cert. I am a Security Engineer for EDS. This is my next venture along with CheckPoints certs. Is this a waste of my time. I guess we will see when the market comes back. In the mean time, though, I will be preparing myself for a better future. See Anonymous, I love this industry because of slackers like you. You aim so low and think so little of your abilities, that you will keep me employed and at make a great living doing what I love to do. Go flip hamburgers. I like mine cooked medium rare. Is that to hard for you to figure out as well? Probably.
4/1/02: BaDPaCKeT from Orange County says: I am interested in this as my ONLY certification. I did not want to be associated with the test pro's and certification monkeys. But feel this is the only way to make my boss happy because he doesn't know sh*t - but to think that I must join with you guys who are so arrogant and ELITE... I bet you people don't even know how to write your own shell code. Did any of you even comment on ANONs last comment? Router Based Encryption DOES SUCK. Do you know why? see you in class.
