Microsoft To Raise Exam Prices 25 Percent Next Year
12/5/2001 -- Sources have told MCPMag.com that beginning Jan. 4, 2002, U.S. pricing for Microsoft exams through Prometric and VUE testing centers will increase 25 percent to $125. Microsoft's exam pricing hasn't changed in about seven years.
The increase comes at a time of global recession, and speculation is that the increase will help to offset the added cost of maintaining the certification program's quality. Andy Barkl, MCT and owner of WeTrainIT in Glendale, Arizona, notices that Microsoft is following suit with other certification programs. "Cisco exams were just raised to $125 also and CompTIA exams always have been more expensive than most."
The increase is likely to affect international pricing. Georges Thibault, an MCT in Quebec, Canada, calls the increase "ridiculous." He notes that the exchange rate can translate to about $200 Canadian. "Why does Microsoft have to make the certification process so expensive?" Microsoft would not comment on the increase, but plans to officially release this information on Friday. -MCPMag.com

You guys have got to be havin' a laugh! I appreciate that a 25% increase isnt the most welcome of things MS could do but over 6 years....come on!! I personally take the exams for my own satisfaction rather than to get(or keep) a job. I agree that the cert is not worth as much as it was a while back but for those trying to get the foot in the door; I'd still reccommend it as a sure fire way of proving that you have the ability to learn and assimilate technology....C ya.... |

I think the 25 dollars is not a big increase but they should not apply that to people who are already enrolled in the courses, they want us to be loyal & "Get Certified" & what do they do., when I'm climbing up that ladder to finish my MCSE... They step on my fingers & knock me down again. What's next... They going to charge for the use of their logo's... Come on MS. Give all of us people who legimately want to get your cert. a break. At least you guys in the us, are not paying double. In canada a 100US exam is 150.00-200.00 canadian. Depending on the exchange rate. The least they could do is offer unified pricing. make it 125 can & 125 US. |

Well I think that since I'm in the MCSE Program I must finish it. I only have passed 1 Exam so far, but I won't pay more for the exams. Here in canada the economy is really hurting bad, I have worked hard to get the experience, Now a company here won't hire me unless i have the "PAPER" to go with it. I just hope microsoft doesn't price themselves out of the IT market with their cert prices. Yes I think standardized pricing should be right across the board. 125Can 125US or 125 Rubles... Whatever... Just make it fair to each person. Also For those who talk about MS cert being useless. I sometimes have to agree. I'm just using it to get my foot in the door, then its on to bigger & better things, UNIX, Linux, whatever is needed out there. |

The new billionaire rankings are coming out so I need the extra cash. Remember who's number 1. Canadian dollars don't even put me in the top ten, sorry. Everyone pays the same $125 USD. I need it because all those lawyers were expensive. |

I do not understand this "paper MCSE" diatribe. The first NT tests were truly simple, i.e., "what does NT stand for" type questions. Out of curiosity, taking the exam just before Feb. '01 expiration date revealed that the exams had changed tremendously, in terms of their complexity. Thus, it may well be those who complain of "paper MCSE's" know they could not pass the current exams, and know they did not have to know as much as current examinees are required to know in order to receive certification. Personally, I think anyone who cries the "paper MCSE" wail should be required by their employer to re-test to see if they really do know what they are talking about. |

The attacks against Microsoft are misplaced. MSFT gets very little of the test fee from the testing vendors, and makes no profit on the tests. What little they do get is spent on running the program worldwide. They could easily be losing money on the certification program. Vue and Prometric are more culpable here. |

You know Linux is looking better all the time! Especially for small businesses that can't or won't spend the money for Microsoft software. Have you priced Windows 2k server and the client access licenses or Microsoft Exchange 2000 and the client access licenses---unbelievable! |
