Microsoft Picks Prometric for Exam Delivery Into 2008

7/11/2007 -- Next year, Prometric will be sole company to deliver exam services officially for Microsoft.

For years, Microsoft has offered certification and Dynamics exams through two official exam providers, Pearson Vue and Thomson Prometric. That's about to change next year, as Microsoft pares the offering to just one company in 2008: Prometric.

According to information posted on the Microsoft MCP Web site, exam takers can continue to register for MCP and Dynamics exams through Vue until Aug. 30, 2007, and take exams through Vue until Dec. 31, 2007. Thereafter, exam delivery worldwide will be through solely through Prometric centers.

The change doesn't affect MCP transcripts, as both exam delivery companies send all reporting information immediately to Microsoft soon after exam takers finish an exam.

Microsoft has posted an FAQ that explains further details, including how Vue exam vouchers can be exchanged later on for Prometric vouchers.

MCP reaction has been mixed. "At a local city level, not all test centers are opened daily -- certainly not weekends or longer opening hours -- which severely restricts the choice of a suitable test center even more," explained Desmond Lee, an MCT and consultant based in Switzerland. Lee believes quality will become an issue at some point: "The lack of any competition usually leads to higher cost...[and] complacency results in no motivation or push to innovate or improve, a drop in quality, inattention to details...etc."

"By limiting themselves to one provider, they won't be able to service as many test takers," observed Mark Horninger, an IT consultant and trainer with Haverford Consultants in Philadelphia. "It's a step in the wrong direction."

A good exam experience counts high with frequent exam takers and if Prometric can deliver at the local level, the matter may be moot.

"I don't necessarily prefer one over the other," said Andy Barkl, an MCT with WeTrainIT in Phoenix. "It all boils down to the local test center staff, location and equipment when I make my choice."

Horninger agreed: " I've taken exams at both Vue and Prometric and find the quality is relatively the same."

Barkl said he's been taking exams since the beginning of the MCP program and remembers a time when "you could only take a Microsoft exam at Sylvan Prometric."

Noteworthy: Pearson Vue has announced a release that it is the "primary vendor" for Cisco Systems' CCNA and CCIE certification programs. To view the release, click here. -Michael Domingo

7/11/07: Anonymous says: This is a very bad move from MSFT. 1) The Prometric customer support is very bad vs. VUE. 2) The VUE website features that you can schedule a test the day before and even cancel the test or re-schedule the test within 8 hours is amazing and no way closer than Prometric. The center that I am going was offering Prometric and VUE, they changed to only VUE becuase no body was taking Prometric.
7/11/07: Anonymous says: Microsoft does it again! Now some test takers will have travel hours and hours to write an exam. Pearson Vue centres were often located in smaller, less urban areas, thereby offering the service to everyone. Prometric centres are in larger centers. My experience with Prometric has been very bad...waited 14 weeks, (yes 14 weeks) to get results of a Beta exam and never did get anything in writing. After 17 calls was just told I had failed! That is unacceptable!
7/11/07: bkhorn from Easton, PA says: This is very disturbing news. I just took the 70-290 exam. You get a little over 3 hours to complete but it took me 5 hours from start to finish. The test program crashed or hung 5 different times. I called the next working day to complain but they acted like it was no big deal as I had passed. Well it was a big deal and very nerve racking.
7/11/07: erfjr from Seattle says: Prometric had a major facility malfunction (caused by another tenant) on Saturday night; they did not contact me to cancel my PMP exam scheduled for the following Friday (*four* business days later). When I rescheduled the first time, their system allowed the central scheduling people to schedule me into the out-of-commission facility (on the 3rd time, they go it right). The local test center people were fine; the telephone support people were fine; the place was a dump; their management, their ability to plan, and their ability to execute all suck (and I'm management). Prometric is *exactly* like a really bad airline...and it's being sold off by Thomson.
7/12/07: Nick Rhodes from Wales (UK) says: There are no Prometric test centres in Wales!!!
7/12/07: John B from UK says: Did all my previous MCP exams with VUE because they had the most convenient location for me. Just tried to register on Prometric, they insist on a 'phone number but my dialling code is 5 digits long and their form only takes 3 - I can get around it by adding the other 2 digits to my number but it doesn't give me a lot of confidence if they can't even get this right.
7/12/07: Don Geiger from Akron, OH says: In my area, there about half a dozen Pearson Vue test centers within 10 miles. There are only about 10 Thomson Prometric test centers in the entire state of Ohio! I've had troulbe scheduling an exam at the ones within an hour drive due to their limited hours. I have nerve damage in my leg, making trips of more than an hour or so very painful. I certainly don't want to drive for three hours to take an exam while in great pain from the drive. In the past, there were local Thomson Prometric test centers, and scheduling was always a problem. Once, when I tried to schedule one exam in the morning and one in the afternoon, they refused to do so, saying that there wasn't enough time in the day for me to take two two-hour exams! This may vry well mean that I no longer certify on Microsoft technologies.
7/12/07: Joan from San Diego, Ca says: I'm not sure of the reasoning behind Microsoft's decision but once again it seems that they think of themselves first. I have used both Pearson Vue and Thomson Prometric test centers and there is really no difference. I'm lucky to have a good selection of locations for both test centers here in San Diego. If I had to travel an hour or more just to test I'd think twice about continually upgrading my Microsoft certifications, especially since there are times that I have to take a test more than once, just wouldn't be worth it. I'm already an MCSE so I would leave it at that and forget about keeping up with the new tests. A word to Microsoft: Listen to those who represent you and are proud to say that they are Microsoft Certified. Choice is good.
7/12/07: Mahmoud Jameeel from Cairo Egypt says: Very Bad Move from M$! the logical option would have been to discontinue prometric and continue with the better supported greater number of sites Preason!!!
7/12/07: Anonymous says: Reading the blogs, I'm just REALLY suprised Michael's assessment was that the reaction was mixed! http://blogs.msdn.com/trika/archive/2007/07/06/microsoft-learning-announces-prometric-as-exam-provider.aspx
