CompTIA Gets Fed. Grant To Start IT Apprenticeship Program

6/6/2001 -- The Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) announced yesterday that it received a $550,000 grant from the U.S. Dept. of Labor to develop an apprenticeship program for entry-level IT professionals.

Named the Technical Support Specialist Apprenticeship, the program will focus on both on-the-job training as well as supplemental technical instruction. No doubt, entry-level certifications such as CompTIA's A+ and Network+ will be integrated into the program.

In a printed statement, John Venator, president and CEO of CompTIA, said "This grant enables CompTIA to expand our efforts to help solve America's IT worker shortage. Our innovative apprenticeship program will increase the number of skilled, CompTIA-certified, entry-level IT workers available to fill the more than 400,000 currently vacant IT positions in the United States. Programs like these offer a possible solution to the current IT workforce shortage."

The program will be developed from now through December 2002.

6/6/01: alab says: Boy! CompTIA seems to be on a roll nowadays. Seems like there are so many exciting things happening there. All of a sudden, they have doubled their certification offerings, got the rest of the industry majors to map their certifications or fold it into COmptias. Way to go comptia. keep up the great work. You defy the norm of the non-aggressive vendor-neutral association.
6/6/01: Diane says: Hi - If this is true, I'd be interested in joining the program. I currently hold A+, Network+ and I-Net+ - does this mean CompTIA will train me as an "apprentice"? What exactly does it mean for me? Diane.
6/6/01: Diane says: P.S. -- I tried to search CompTIA's website for further info. relating to the above news article - but couldn't find it... I would like to email them about this program if it means that I can get some training! email me if you can help! Thanks, Diane.
6/6/01: Becky says: Hi Diane -- I noticed that too; this was just announced, so I'm sure the information will be posted shortly. I'm not sure what it'll mean -- unfortunately, probably not much in the short run since the program will take 18 months to develop. Still, get in touch with them -- it couldn't hurt! :-)

6/8/01: Ferddie says: I am currently in a instructor led Cisco class and will be completing it by December. Maybe this program will benefit me as a entry-level technician.
6/25/01: Becky says: Keep checking the CompTIA Web site at www.comptia.org everyone -- that's who's running the program. If I learn any more details, though, I'll post them here. -- Becky
