CompTIA Releases New A+ Objectives
2/19/2003 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) recently posted new objectives for its A+ certification exams.
As reported by CertCities.com last month, the organization will be updating its two A+ certification exams later this year. The organization characterizes the updates as "minor."
"The certification content continues to validate that the successful candidate has important knowledge and skills necessary to competently install, build, configure, upgrade, troubleshoot and repair personal computer compatible hardware and PC operating systems, including troubleshooting basic network and Internet connectivity, dial-up, DSL, and cable," the organization said on its Web site. "In addition, the 2003 upgrade covers the latest memory, bus, peripherals, operating systems (Me and XP) and wireless."
The new objectives, available in PDF format from CompTIA's Web site here, are more detailed than those previously released. However, CompTIA has not yet said how each major domain area will be weighted on the exams.
Exam items based on the new objectives are currently being developed. These questions will be added to the current A+ exams as beta items this summer, with the revised exams launching sometime before the end of 2003.
CompTIA said that A+ candidates will be allowed to mix-and-match 2001 and 2003 objective exams to earn the title (e.g., the Hardware exam based on the current objectives and the Operating Systems exam based on the new objectives can be used together to earn A+ certification).
The upgrade does not affect those already A+ certified as all CompTIA certifications are good for "life" -- i.e., candidates are not required to recertify.

Good to see an update to include XP, but Windows ME? Unfortunately these objectives are still very US-centric in choice of technologies. For example, why mention cable modems specifically? We already suffer from some inappropriate questions about repairs and maintenance (our electrical regulations are MUCH more stringent than USA). But I still can't get over the explicit mention of Windows ME. Even MS have given up on that one |

If you don't have money, don't even think about it, if you don't want to spend, don't look for any certs. If this was about CompTIA wanting more money, all they would have to do is require recertification every two years. But they don't. Your A+ is good for life and you don't have to take the exam again if you don't want to. |

There are two little known books that I used to demolish both A+ tests and the Security+ test. They were: A+ Adaptive Exams and The Security+ Exam Guide. These will take care of all your money concerns and help you guys TIP! (Test In Peace) As for the new A+ exams, I heard they where going to be 25% hands on?? |

I think that this is quite a hard business for everybody, particularly including for those worried about the money or for the lack thereof. Josh, I'm not sure why an idiot would make you look bad even if an idiot could even pass the qualification and spend the money? What if you failed, particularly if indeed as Alex (from NZ) says the objectives are US Centric? Then still, Alex I don't know what is wrong with ME. For me it has been the most stable OS I have used. Then, Ramone please give publisher ISBN numbers for the books if they are that good. I still think you can fail and I think you can be unlucky too. I am sorry Becky you have felt that you needed to delete postings. Maybe a fight is better than a good debate if people think their will must prevail.
