Questions
1. MaryJo is the local user of a member server in your domain. Her username is MaryJo and she uses a local profile stored on the C drive of her machine. In what directory are MaryJo's desktop shortcuts stored? (Select the best choice.)
a. C:\Winnt\Profiles\Desktop
b. C:\Winnt\Profiles\MaryJo\Desktop
c.C:\Winnt\MaryJo\Profiles\Desktop
d. C:\Winnt\Profiles\Desktop\MaryJo
2. Which of the following statements are true of RAS AutoDial? (Select all choices that are correct.)
a. it maps network addresses to RAS phonebook entries
b. it is automatically enabled when you start your computer
c. it requires at least one TAPI dialing location
d. it works over NetBEUI, TCP/IP or IPX/SPX connections
3. Consider the following Memory settings taken from the Network option on Control Panel for a PDC: What task is this PDC optimized to perform? (Select the best choice.)
a. managing a network of around sixty users
b. managing a small network of around ten users
c. running a SQL Server client-server application
d. sharing an Access database
4. What steps can be taken to improve performance if excessive paging is occurring on your server? (Select all choices that are correct.)
a. add more physical memory
b. distribute the paging file(s) across a number of disks
c. move the paging file off the disk that contains the Windows NT system files
d. reduce the size of the paging file
5. Your Windows NT Server computer has three physical disks. What is the best way to implement fault tolerance on your computer to allow the maximum amount of storage space? (Select the best choice.)
a. implement RAID Level 0
b. implement disk mirroring
c. implement disk duplexing
d. implement disk striping with parity
6. Ann is a graphic artist, and she often needs to send large print jobs to her local printer. Her Pentium Pro 200 system is running Windows NT Server 4.0 with 64 MB of RAM and a 2-GB hard disk. Ann's hard drive is approaching capacity and she has recently added another 2-GB hard disk. She has been experiencing problems when she tries to print large graphics files because her default spool folder is located on her old hard drive. How can Ann change the location of the spool folder to the new hard drive? (Select the best choice.)
a. edit the Registry
b. edit the user profile
c. choose the Server option in Control Panel
d. choose the System option in Control Panel
e. choose Server Properties from the File menu in My Computer
Answers:
1) Choice b is correct. Each user on a workstation has a directory named after their username that is a subdirectory of the Winnt\Profiles directory. The directory called Desktop is a subdirectory of the C:\Winnt\Profiles\directory, and it contains desktop items including shortcuts and files. Shortcut files have a suffix of LNK. Reference: NTCP, pp. 85-86.
2) Only choices a, b and c are correct. RAS AutoDial maps network addresses to RAS phonebook entries. It automatically attempts to create a network connection when a network address is referenced from an application or from the command line. AutoDial is automatically enabled when you start your computer. However, it only functions with the TCP/IP or NetBEUI protocol and requires at least one TAPI dialing location. Reference: NTNS, pp. 109-111.
3) Choice d is correct. Memory settings can be tuned to increase network responsiveness. You would set a domain controller's memory setting to Minimize Memory Used if you only expect about ten network connections to be established. If you expect between ten and sixty-four network connections to be made, then the setting of Balance would be used. If you anticipate a large number of file sharing operations to occur, then the Maximize Throughput for File Sharing setting would be selected. Finally, if the domain controller's primary function is running distributed applications that perform their own memory caching (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server), then the Maximize Throughput for Network Applications setting would be used. Reference: NTCP, p. 282.
4) Only choices a, b and c are correct. The best way to solve excessive paging file problems is to install more physical RAM, but improved performance can also be realized by moving the paging file off the disk that contains the Windows NT system files, or to use the Virtual Memory dialog box from the System option in the Control Panel to place the paging files on more than one disk. This would, of course, require that you have a hard disk controller capable of reading and writing to more than one disk at a time. Although some applications can perform better by increasing the size of the paging file, decreasing the size of the paging file will not improve performance. Reference: NTCP, pp. 271-273.
5) Choice d is correct. Disk striping with parity protects the system against data loss in the event that a single disk fails. It can support more than three hard drives. Disk mirroring can only support two hard drives. RAID Level 0 (disk striping without parity) does not provide any fault tolerance because there is no data redundancy. Reference: NTCP, pp. 240-241. RKRG, Chapter 4, Planning a Fault-Tolerant Disk Configuration, pp. 163-165.
6) Choice a is correct. Ann must edit the Registry to change the location of the spool file. The correct key to edit is: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System \CurrentControlSet \Control \Print \Printers. Another way to change the spool file location is to use the Advanced property sheet for the print server. Reference: NTCP, p. 192.
