Prosoft Announces Free CIW Site Designer Beta
8/17/2005 -- Prosoft Learning Corporation recently announced a free beta opportunity for a new version of its Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) Site Designer exam.
The CIW v5 Site Designer beta exam (1D1-520) will be available Aug. 29 through Sept. 16 at Prometric testing centers in the United States and United Kingdom only.
To take the beta, candidates must register for a voucher through this page on the company's Web site by Sept. 14.
Those who pass the beta may receive credit toward certification if they hold a current CIW Associate title and complete a CIW Certification agreement, the company said.
The final version of the exam will be released in "late 2005."

Just finished taking the beta. Most questions were so easy as to be absurd (do you design a site from your own desires, or the target audience's?), however some were quite difficult. Knowing my luck, it's the easy ones they will throw out, so I probably failed. For example, nowhere on the website does it say Dreamweaver will be part of the test, but there were several questions on the product (including one on which hot-key combination to use, and a few on what file extensions the product uses to store stuff). Considering that I have never used Dreamweaver before, I had to guess on a lot of those questions. Also, the website's "Third-Party Books, Web Sites, and Newsgroups" section contains many links that are just plain frustrating and/or wrong. (How do we get to the article mentioned on www.finetuning.com, etc.?) Do read the W3C sections on HTML, XML, and CSS, even if you have experience. I hope that Prosoft will update their website (http://www.ciwcertified.com/exams/1d0520.asp?comm=CND&llm=1) to include Dreamweaver and better links. If you take the exam, you MUST have experience using Dreamweaver and Flash, as well as understand the various graphic formats out there and when to use what. That and three months experience will probably lead you to a pass. P.S. Thank you CertCities for posting the availability of this Beta. I would not have known about it if it wasn't for you guys. |

Today was the last day to take the 1D0-520 CIW Site Designer beta. I took mine today. I have to agree with Larry, if you have not *developed* and *explored* Dreamweaver and Front Page, you're not going to know what they're talking about. (The specific version of the listed programs is unimportant; just basics are covered, but know your terminology!) File Formats are drilled pretty hard, especially graphic file formats.... The rest of the exam was CSS DHTML, XML, JavaScript, and a few security questions here and there pretty much made up this really long - 213 question exam. Results will be in in 4 - 6 weeks.... If anyone is interested in getting started - I suggest finding QUALITY tutorials for the above acronyms (say, at an .edu site) Also be a proficient coder and debugger in HTML, CSS, XML, etc. as listed above. Thanks certcities for giving me the 411 on this. I hope my post helps someone out :) Matthew (A-plus, N-plus, I-plus, Sec-Plus, CIW-Admin, CNA) |

I just found out I passed this exam - it was listed on my Prometric transcript but I have yet to get anything from Prosoft. Just goes to show that you can succeed on this exam without knowing or using Dreamweaver. (If I were you, I wouldn't risk it, however.) I'll be taking the 1D1-525 beta in January, 2006 and will give a report on that exam then. I am surprised certcities hasn't mentioned that Beta. Suggestion to certcities: how about a section on your website that lists open Betas and other free exams, and how to qualify for them? Hey, now that I've passed the exam, you can hire me to design the site. :-) !!! Does anyone know if I can call myself a CIW anything since I have not taken their foundation exam yet? |
