Microsoft To Charge $400 Program Fee for MCT 2002

4/5/2001 -- MCPMag.com reported in an e-mail newsletter yesterday that Microsoft will start charging a $400 fee for the MCT program. The report said that although Microsoft hasn't officially confirmed the fee, sources familiar with the program said Microsoft will do so next week.

The fee comes as no surprise -- Microsoft in the past has indicated that it would incorporate this requirement (see "Details on Continuing Education Credits for MCTs").

According to MCPMag.com, the fee may not have much impact on freelance trainers. Mike Stroud, a technical trainer in Ontario, Canada, considers it a reasonable cost, but would like see better benefits, "like TechNet, MSDN, beta software...." But the impact on technical training companies remains to be seen. Some companies are likely to use it as a benefit in order to retain staff.

The MCT 2002 program will also add another benefit: downloadable trainer kits.

According to the report, program changes go into effect October 1, 2001. MCPMag.com also said that Microsoft will furnish official details next week on its MCP site. -- B.N.

4/12/01: peter says: the price is madness as being an mcse has brought little returns. For the time you spend getting your slef in to gear it just not worth it at end of the Day.My experince is my Comptia certifications have brought me more returns work and money wise.
4/13/01: Anonymous says: I am MCT sinnce long. I think the fee is too high what ever the benefit they are proposing. It should not be more than $50
4/13/01: dberk says: The changes in requirements are to lower the numbers of MCTs which in turn will raise the cost of trainers. I just don't think it's right for us to pay for it up front, M$ should see how the other 2001 changes affect the MCTs 1st. I have taught in the past but work a full time job - I was using it for extra income. But now, it's not worth the cost, time and effort.
4/13/01: Anonymous says: It's worth it to me just for the downloadable trainer kits, but then I split my time 50/50 between consulting and training. I understand it will hurt the guys who only train 3-4 times a year, but the fewer MCTs out there the more mine is worth. Besides my daily rate is $850 so this is 1/2 of one day, not a big deal for me. Of course I can always find other things to do with the cash!
4/13/01: jmk says: It's less than $35 a month, quit your crying!!!!
4/13/01: Dean says: The initial price is expensive for us on the outside wanting to be inside working with our chosen specialty. It is time I pay, which will discipline me to focus more precisely.I'm disabled, financially unable to start, will continue to get there.Dean
4/14/01: Anonymous says: This sounds like I'm paying you, so I can work for you.
