Intel To Kill Certification Program

4/3/2001 -- Intel will announce as early as Friday that it is discontinuing its certification program.

When asked about the closure, a press representative for Intel told CertCities that "the program is not closing, it's changing." However, Intel's Web site, which has posted details about the "change," states that "The Intel Certification program will be closing on December 31, 2001" and that logo use and benefits will not be honored past that date. The exams themselves will be retired on May 31, 2001.

Intel declined to commment as to why the program is being discontinued. However, the representative did say, "[Intel is just] trying to make sure we meet the needs of current industry standards for certification."

Intel sent letters to its program participants in March explaining the closure and offering to transfer candidates to Prosoft's Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) program and/or one of two CompTIA certifications, depending on the certification held or being pursued.

The transfers offered are as follows:

Intel Certification Transfered To
Intel Solutions Consultant CompTIA Server+ and CIW Professional
eBusiness Specialist CompTIA Server+ and CIW Professional
Server/Platform Integration CompTIA Server+ and CIW Professional
Networking CompTIA Network+ and CIW Professional

Details on the closure have been published on the company's Web site. The Web site also states that Intel's training program will remain intact.

4/4/01: Leo says: It surprised me a lot, since I was just considering add Intel certification to my other ones (mainly Microsoft), expecting this to improve the odds for me to find a good job position. Leo Pastor Cordoba, ARGENTINA
4/5/01: Julie says: A point of clarification on this article. "Killing" a certification infers that the certification becomes dead or obsolete. In the case of Intel, great efforts were made to provide a migration path to all individuals in process or currently certified. Most of these individuals qualify for at least one widely accepted IT certification. In fact, the CompTIA and CIW programs are both ranked in the top 6 of all IT certification programs in terms of volume and industry acceptance. The feedback we have received from Intel certification members is that this was a positive move that helps simplify the certification options in the industry, while providing them with valid certification credentials. - Julie Rowe, ProsoftTraining.com
