Microsoft Debuts New Hands-On Questions, Posts Demo

4/4/2005 -- As expected, last week Microsoft added hands-on simulation questions to live versions of two of its 2003-track certification exams.

The exams are:

  • 70-290, Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment
  • 70-291, Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure

Both exams are core requirements for the company's Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) titles.

Microsoft announced in February that it would be seeding hands-on simulation questions into these exams, with others to follow. According to MCPmag.com, Microsoft exams 70-293, Planning and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure, and 70-294, Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure, will be seeded with hands-on questions in June, and a schedule of other exams to follow will be posted later this month.

Microsoft orginally said it would post a demo of the new simulation questions in early March. However, the demo only recently went live on Microsoft's Web site, here (scroll down to the orange button in middle of page to access). The demo lasts about five minutes and has one sample hands-on question.

4/6/05: anonymous from Madison, WI says: I took 70-290 on March 31st and was suprised that it contained the new simulation questions. Frankly, I found them easier than asking a question on the same topic because they were very clear about their intent.
4/7/05: Anonymous from Richmond Va says: I think this is great, I hate all those wordy questions that just try to confuse the hell out of you. This is to the point. If you know what you are doing in a Cisco exam you pass but it hasn't been that way with Microsoft, I think this is a step in the right direction. Later paper MCSEs
4/7/05: Matt from Boston says: I have taken both the 290 and 291 and found the sims much clearer to understand a better indicator of how well I understood the material. These test are so wordy, as another poster said, that the sims made a very nice break. They stillhave some bugs so watch out for things not coming up when you click on them, but other then that they are great.
4/7/05: Mike says: I agree, MS tests are very wordy. For the new test did anyone use a MS press study guide? Or a practice test from "Self test or Measure up"? Of course the best practice for a sim is ojt.

4/14/05: Anonymous says: Cool. Thanks
4/23/05: Anonymous says: Did anyone use ms press to prep for test?
6/8/05: yeminwin from Burma says: I passed my 290 exam at 17 March.I face 4 simulation question. But I think this simulation questions have still bugs. When I click to simulation button and active desktop appear, but my testing center's computer is now running Norton antivirus and it block some script. Another bug is in the question I have to deny take owner ship permission. When I click the deny check box, deny ACE appear but when I look back the grant permission the allow permission is still checked.I think in this question I only need to remove grant permission. But it means microsoft simulation question is not intelligent as cisco simulation. So please take care when you face simulation question.
