Server+ Hits 10,000; New Version Coming in 2005

10/20/2004 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) recently announced that 10,000 people have earned its vendor-neutral Server+ certification.

The title, which covers server hardware and related technology, debuted in 2001. It is currently undergoing a revision that will launch in "Q1 of 2005," the organization's Web site states. A comparison of the old and new objectives can be found here.

CompTIA offers several other vendor-neutral titles, including A+ (500,000 certified), Network+ (135,000) and Security+ (10,000).

More information about Server+ can be found here. -Becky Nagel

10/20/04: mikeeec says: It is sad that they have gotten so many people to waste time on their exams. I had to take this exam for a vendor warranty certification - it took all of 15 minutes. CompTIA's exams do not even qualify as entry-level certifications - if you know how to turn on a computer, you can pass.
10/22/04: Certifyable says: HP, IBM, and Intel seem to think the Server exam qualifies as an entry level certification. And the exam questions are developed by IT Subject Matter Experts based on core skills.
10/27/04: mikeeec from California says: CompTIA is great - I was able to get several certifications before I even started working with computers - I would recommend that everyone take their tests, it is really helpful to be able to put the initials on a resume even with little or no knowledge.
10/31/04: nasmyt from Sweden says: It's not that easy at all as people may think (at least not the 2004 version). I took th beta, and i have to say that CompTIA actually raised the bar in this version. If you wan't to make it easier for yourself. Go for the current version before it's to late :-)
1/7/05: slypie from Newcastle, England says: Server plus is one of the worst exams I've ever taken. It's so poorly written that it looks like a chimp proof read the thing before releasing the exam to the public, that and the point that it's a complete ripoff don't justify taking the exam. Comptia are simply too greedy for their own good.
1/25/05: Certifyable says: The new exam is due out 2-14-05 and there is a new CompTIA supplemental exam guide to help with the changes. Hit the website and take a look: http://www.comptia.org/certification/server/SEG_promo.aspx
