CIOs Recommend Networking for IT Greenhorns

8/24/2004 -- IT staffing firm Robert Half Technology recently found that when IT executives were asked to recommend a career path for greenhorn IT professionals, a plurality recommended networking.

Robert Half’s poll included responses from more than 1,400 CIOs from companies with 100 or more employees. Each of the participating CIOs was asked, “Which one of the following areas of specialization would you recommend to someone just beginning his or her career in information technology?”

A clear plurality – 29 percent – recommended networking. That was 11 percent better than the second most recommended career, information security, and more than twice tally of third place finisher help desk and end-user support.

For the record, data and database management was the fourth most recommended career choice, with 13 percent; project management fifth, with 12 percent; and software development sixth, with 10 percent.

"Networking expertise remains critical within IT departments as firms use their internal systems to share data companywide and power their business-critical applications," said Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, in a statement. "A fundamental understanding of network management is also the basis for positions in growing areas such as information systems security, wireless communication, broadband and...VOIP." -Stephen Swoyer

8/27/04: zooloo says: Articles like this can be mis-leading. Readers of this web page would probably consider networking to mean routers, switches and the like. If you look at jobs on Monster and other web sites, networking usually means server and pc administration. What's an IT Greenhorn to do if the industry can't even agree on definitions of words?
8/29/04: Anonymous says: Makes me feel more appreciated as a network admin.
8/30/04: Anonymous says: One question still not answered for many IT greenhorns, is where and how to get started.
9/18/04: wayne62682 says: That's what I say. Everyone always says to network with people, but HOW do you do that when you don't KNOW anyone in the field?? Send random letters to people?
9/21/04: lvidler says: If you do not understand this article then it should be clear that you are not suppose to go into the IT industry. How are you going to understand something as complex as a network if this article is confusing? Let the people with basic comprehension skills fight it out for the few good jobs that are left.
