Vue Offers Free Retakes on Microsoft Exams in U.S.

5/12/2004 -- According to a recent post on Microsoft's certification newsgroups, Pearson Vue testing centers are offering a free re-take on selected exams that candidates failed to pass. The retake is good only on exams taken between April 30 and July 31 and only for U.S. candidates.

The exam list includes:

  • 70-270, Windows XP
  • 70-290, Managing Windows 2003 Server
  • 70-291, Managing a Windows 2003 Server Network
  • 70-292, MCSA Upgrade
  • 70-293, Planning a Windows 2003 Server Network
  • 70-294, Planning Windows 2003 Server Active Directory Infrastructure
  • 70-296, MCSE Upgrade
  • 70-297, Designing Windows 2003 Active Directory
  • 70-298, Designing Windows 2003 Security

The re-test must be taken by August 31.

Although the promotion became known earlier through those Microsoft newsgroup posting, today Vue officially announced it through a Web page available here. According to this page, candidates must call (800) TEST-REG and ask for the "Second Shot" promotion in order to participate.

5/12/04: The re-test must be taken by August 1? says: I heard this few days ago. thanks for confirming it. You are saying The re-test must be taken by August 1 but GetCertify4Less.com is say August 31. which one is correct. When I contacted them they say Aug 31, 2004 is correct one. http://www.getcertify4less.com/microsoft-pearsonvue-secondshot.asp
5/12/04: Ann Jones from Fort Worth says: The information listed in this article is actually incorrect. The testing dates are April 1,2004 - July 31,2004 and you must retake the exam by August 31,2004. Here is a link to the actual offer on VUE's website. http://www.pearsonvue.com/ms/2ndshot/index.asp
5/14/04: Becky Nagel from Editor, CertCities.com says: STORY CORRECTED: Sorry guys, we were working off two different information sources there, and then I dropped the 3 off the Aug. 31 date. Story correct as now shown.
5/12/04: Anonymous says: less money
5/13/04: Anonymous from PR says: And since when is Microsoft known for fair business practices? Example: PR is a US territory, but since MS decided to have it managed through its caribbean (now practically not existent) division, we don't get to enjoy the promo. Major Bummer. Well they can stick their tests up their @$$. Who wants to be NT5.1 certified anyways? That's why they're practically begging US residents to test, almost nobody wants to...
5/13/04: Anonymous from Tucson AZ says: I stopped testing when they sent my job to India.
5/13/04: HA HA HA from US says: Yeah, exactly. How funny is that. I took all the NT stuff to MCSE(Internet) which with Windows 95 and 98 which I took to was like a dozen exams. Then I upgraded to 2000 (duh), now 2003 comes and low and behold, I know nobody who did the first two who are dealing with the new exams. Books arent selling, exams arent selling, and there are very little jobs opening up that need these skill sets... very few companies going to 2003 from 2000... good, let MS suffer, its time anyway. Why not offer a million freebies to India and China where all the US jobs are headed anyway, that makes more sense. Why test on something to better yourself when all that matters is the emptying of your pockets so you cant get a job. People, take a look around - no jobs, schools closing, books not selling, now free tests? Whats next, free certifications? :)
5/17/04: dlee from Chicago says: I'm new to all the certification. I agree what you are saying about the jobs and the usefullness of these certifications. right now i'm A plus and Net plus certified. I was going to consider MS but because of the recerts and the lack of jobs, I rather go with CCNA. Any suggestions from anyone?
5/17/04: Becky Nagel, Editor says: Hi Dlee -- Are you looking for an entry-level job right now? Or are you already employed? If looking, I'd say hold off getting any more certifications right now unless you really need them; not because of the market or anything, but because you want to get an ROI on what you do, but if you don't really need it to get that first job (assuming that's what your looking for), you might want to wait until you have an employer who might cover your costs. -- Becky
