Federal Probe Targets ITT Tech

3/2/2004 -- Classes are back to normal at ITT Technical Institute campuses across the country after federal agents raided the company's headquarters and 10 of its campuses last week in response to grand jury subpoenas and search warrants seeking various enrollment data.

Last Wednesday, agents searched ITT's Indianapolis, Indiana headquarters and 10 schools, including campuses in California, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Oregon and Louisiana. The grand jury subpoenas that triggered the searches were issued by a U.S. District Court in Houston, and sought data on student placement, retention, attendance and grades, along with recruitment and admissions materials, graduate salaries, and transfers of credits to other schools.

Classes were cancelled for the day at the targeted campuses, and students, faculty and staff were questioned. In a statement, a U.S. attorney in Houston did not give a reason for the raids. No charges have been brought against the company.

ITT spokeswoman Nancy Brown said today that the probe won't affect current ITT students, and will have no effect on anyone holding a degree from any ITT Tech school. "All the colleges are open and functioning perfectly normally," she added.

At an investor conference call this morning, ITT's chairman and CEO, Rene R. Champagne said he believes the company has had strong internal controls and that the investigation "will show that we're in compliance." Analysts who focus on the education market said the probe might be related to Title IV, a federal regulation that requires education companies to report certain student data related to federal low-income grants to states. According to company regulatory filings, about 68 percent of ITT's 2003 revenue came from federal education aid programs.

The federal raids immediately affected the company's stock, which fell from last week's high in the mid-50s to a low of $34.50 last Thursday. ITT Educational Services Inc. trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "ESI." News of the probe also affected the entire for-profit education sector, whose shares tend to fluctuate as a group. ITT was trading around $35 a share by mid-week this week, and the remaining stocks in the sector had largely returned to their pre-probe numbers. "In light of the pending federal grand jury investigation of the company and resulting shareholder class action lawsuits," Champagne said during Wednesday's conference call with shareholders, "the company is not able to confirm the internal goals and other projections for the Company's 2004 fiscal year that were previously disclosed by the company."

The dramatic drop in stock prices triggered several class action lawsuits by investors late last week - a common practice when a stock price drops substantially. The lawsuits claim the company artificially maintained or inflated its stock price by issuing false facts or omitting other pertinent ones.

ITT, with some 75 locations in 30 states, is the largest operator in the U.S. of post-secondary school technical education. It offers technology-based associate, bachelor and masters degrees in a variety of subjects, including computer programming, Web development, and engineering, to over 37,000 students. It also offers online education. According to the U.S. Department of Education, ITT granted nearly 15 percent of the total number of associate and bachelor degrees awarded in the U.S. in electronics and electronics-related programs in the 2000-2001 school year, the largest percentage of any single institution. -Linda Briggs

6/10/10: anonymous says: My son was attending ITT Tech this year. He became frustrated after studying so hard to get good grades only to see students in his same classes not turning in work, being late, not showing up & all getting A's just like he was. He also began to realize that most of his instructors were not assigning projects or assignments that pertained specifically to his field of study. Some seemed to be pretty juvenile. He was always on time, always finished his work, always showed up and yet many other students not appearing as determined and serious as he was were showing at top of the class. We tried to talk to someone about his concerns only to be smooth talked into thinking that my son was considered the best in the class with much job potential. They had him attend job castings only to be ignored or showing no interest in him at all. He stopped attending ITT Tech after we researched and called businesses on their so-called hiring list and found out that if anyone was hired from ITT they had to be retrained and many said the students were ill prepared and not viable for hiring unless they had prior experience other than at ITT. Now my son is having to start all over at a real accredited school and owes thousands of dollars from this bad experience. As a mother I want everyone who reads this to know that there are no real fast fix schools out there. It's sad but these schools are out for money to line their own pockets and not for the benefit of helping struggling people earn a reputable education. Yes, there are students who struggle with spelling. etc. who attend these schools but you can mostly blame the educational system at large for pushing students out into society without giving everyone the education they deserve. And yes, there are students out there who want the easy way through by not caring whether they study or show up. But a good instructor knows almost immediately who are the ones who are determined to suceed and who are genuinely struggling to make it through. If teachers don't care then how can students care. If the school system at large doesn't care why should anyone else. So what happens to the ones who do care? They are caught up in a web of deceit and lies of those who don't care except for how much they can swindle out of the ones that do. My son may have earned his grades but the grades are worthless!!! His degree would have been worthless!!! The sad thing is the DEBT is REAL!!! and if everything else has no validity then how could he even begin to pay off such an enormous debt!!! The cost for this fly-by-night hi-end school is horrible! And for a degree that goes nowhere? I am a mom and I don't want to see my son struggling for the rest of his entire life putting his hard earned money into the pockets of greedy and selfish uncompassionate ingrates! FYI - thats why they call these schools "for profit" schools. For those who find anything good to say about this school or any other who preys on the pocketbooks of the not so wealthy - Bless your heart for not being a victim like the rest of us. Or else you are now the proud owner of a nice little bonus for every good remark you post onto the internet for the school where you spend your hard earned time working for. At least you have a job.
6/16/10: groomergal from hesperia california says: Hey just wanted to say thank you for your honesty in the way ITT does business. Our son was looking into the school and we were all for it until one of my clients saw an article and gave me a heads up. You all just saved me a boat load of money! He will be attending our local community college instead so once again a HUGE THANK YOU!!
6/18/10: Ron from Liverpool says: I am currently a student here at ITT as a CNS major, and i find that this school is only half of your commitment, the other half is up to you...i see alot of people complaining about how it was a waste of money and that ITT is a scam, but what did you do personally to make sure that you came out successfully? how about the guy who said he passed and never did any work? am i supposed to sit here in school right now and believe people who only complain about a school and not about how well they pushed there own education along with it. I love ITT, im learning more than i ever knew at a very fast pace while interning, for free In which case, I personally had the motivation to push myself and not blame fault on my wonderful educators, who by all means go well beyond what they need to do to make sure that everyone is successful and that all curriculum follows a stringent course. Go ahead and attend a university that doesnt include books in tuition costs, sit in a classroom with 50 others and tell me yourself in person that it is the best advice to a new highschool graduate to do so.
7/6/10: zachary radcliff from chicago says: is this one person trying to get revenge on ITT because I don't believe this shit. The school can't be that bad
7/9/10: Ivan from Houston says: I would strongly advise you to not go to ITT TECH I graduated in 2004 from a campus in Houston, TX. And I can honestly say If I had known what I know now about that school and the actual job field I would have just went to a community college and received the same two year degree but only paid 3500 dollars for the whole program. Now I owe 35 grand and rising because I’m in school now pursing a bachelor’s degree and my loans are gaining interest. Now for all you guys saying you get what you put in to your education are correct but with ITT you don’t get much The software I used in the drafting and design courses was obsolete before I even graduated the only software that I could market myself knowing was AutoCAD they I heard now they are using Inventor which is good but still the school is horrible I worked hard when I was there and when I got out none of what I learned was useful I’m going to talk to a lawyer about this I would really like to sue them for the cost of the tuition. I had to start all the way over with my education because none of the credits were worth anything and on top of that I had to go back to school and pay to learn up to date software like solid works and Inventor just to get a job. PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE DON”T GO TO ITT and if you are enrolled get out and go to a community college you will save thousands of dollars and get an overall better education. Traditional schooling is better then ITT schooling. I’m not a bitter EX graduate I just learned the hard way so I really want to help people make a wise decision don’t go to ITT if you do I promise you will regret it. Believe me I would not take the time out of my day to type this long paragraph to make up a bunch of lies trust me I have more important things to do but I just happened find this blog and I read the comments and had to post my history with this school well I mean business.
7/14/10: Lawrence from CA says: I was an ITT Tech Network Security student for one day. They messed up my scholarship, my schedule 3 times, and kept my loan and grant money after i told them to take a flying f---. They are nothing buy crooks and need to be shut down. I am not the only one who has been ripped off by ITT Tech (Rancho Cordova, CA) just look on you tube! Please call back the Feds!
7/18/10: MelanieX83 from Puerto Rico says: They provide free email, inexpensive Text (sms) messages and low-cost telephone calls worldwide straight from your browser! Also you could use whatever VoIP Phone, even your Symbian Phone. http://www.mailxxl.com - Free Voice Over IP You will pick up the free Credit of 50 eurocent on signup. its free to test :)
7/28/10: Chuck from California says: Read six years worth of these comments; why are these people still in business? And why doesn't, say, Fox or any other news org. blow the whistle on these guys periodically. Folks like these, who prey on the hopes of those least able to protect themselves, deserve to be in San Quentin or Attica, hopefully servicing the population several times a day. Should be a term of the sentence: as many times as they've screwed each student is how many time they have to get screwed before being released.
7/31/10: Anonymous from Califormia says: I was employed by ITT recently in a senior position. Soon after arriving, I was asked to teach courses in the nursing program that I was not quailfied to teach. Furthermore, this would have been a violation of CAHIIMs accreditation requirements. The Dean tried to intimidate me into doing it and when he saw that I couldn't be intimidated, he fired me. I was there only 6 months. I contacted the accrediting body and told them what was going on. I just heard that the nursing program will be closed.
8/15/10: b from south carolina says: You people make me sick! I'm currently enrolled at ITT-Greenville and all these negative comments are bullshit. Common sense should tell you that if you don't take your classes serious, you're not going to get a serious job. I'm grateful for the opportunity I was given and take pride in it. I mean lets be real about the situation, the feds have a 99.8 conviction rate, so who's in the wrong?? Every last person that left a comment complaining, I can get a vivid depiction of you in head as I type. In the technical world it's not about who is the smartest, it's about who has logic and common sense. The reason why some teachers give students who don't try good grades is because they feel sorry for their ignorance. You are explained the costs before you even start, so basically you paid for those grades. I have received several scholarships since my initial enrollment because I go the extra mile. Just because you go and get a degree doesn't mean a job is going to fall in your lap.
