Allaire Introduces New Web Developer Cert

2/6/2001 -- Internet software company Allaire Corp. formally introduced a new Web Site Developer certification yesterday.

According to Allaire, its Web Site Developer title is designed to provide "a professional level of skill measurement in the activities that demonstrate an individual's competency as a Web Site developer." Consisting of one exam, the certification confirms candidates skills in three key areas: Web page design, authoring and support technologies.

The exam consists of 70 multiple choice questions and costs $100 (U.S.). Allaire recommends that candidates have the following experience before sitting for the exam:

  • One or more years experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Understanding of fundamental Web design principles
  • Understanding of how browsers and Web server process HTTP requests

Allaire will offer an optional training course, "Fast Track to HTML," to help prepare candidates.

VUE will proctor the test worldwide. Candidates can register at http://www.vue.com/allaire.

Allaire also offers a ColdFusion certification. For more information about Allaire, visit http://www.allaire.com. -B.N.

2/6/01: Larry says: What are the 'Web design principles' in which Allaire purports to 'certify' developers? Millions of 'developers' have posted web sites; only a minute percentage of those sites validate to the W3C's HTML standards, including www.allaire.com. If Allaire (whose software I respect and use, by the way) doesn't display a willingness and ability to write valid code - maximized for accessibility and navagability - on their site, I question the 'certification'.
2/7/01: Clipper says: Although I agree that writting valid and accessible code, which meets W3s standards, is something that should be tested for, the fact that Allaire has produced this new certification is a step in the right direction for validating the web developer as a true professional, rather than a run-of-the-mill amateur who slaps together a web site and thinks he/she knows it all. However, because the details are scarce as to what exactly this new certification tests, it is premature to start questioning its validity.
5/18/01: Anonymous says: A Cert for cold fusion... What about ASP? Will MS make a cert for ASP developer?
5/18/01: Mr says: What is ASP
5/19/01: Do Allaire Care? says: RE:Certified Web Site Developer Exam, there doesn't seem to be any exam text, just front up and do the exam, of course being a pro you won't need to study you will know it already, but why do the exam?
