EXCLUSIVE: Brainbench Certs To Cost $19.95

2/1/2001 -- Get ready to shell out $19.95 for those Brainbench certifications: That's the price the online certification company will start charging its customers on March 1, Brainbench co-founder Mike Littman told CertCities in an exclusive interview today.

Brainbench currently offers its 275+ internally created certification exams free to its 2 million registered users. The company announced in January that it would starting charging for its certifications in March; however, the price point for the exams has not been made public until now.

According to Littman, the $19.95 fee will include paper certificates that candidates receive once they pass a test (currently, the certificates cost $8). He said that the online certification company will start notifying its customers of the price tomorrow.

Not all of the company's certifications will convert to the paid model at once: The transition is being made in stages, with some of the site's exams remaining free through 2001 and beyond.

Brainbench is confident that now is the right time to start charging for its certifications. "[We're] very bullish," said Littman, who added that since the company starting charging $8 for its paper certifications in January, the site's traffic has, in fact, seen a bump, and that more members than expected have ordered the certificates.

The company itself has reached some major milestones recently: It is the first online testing company to become ISO 9001 certified, and is working with PeopleSoft and IBM to create custom certification programs.

2/5/01: Anonymous says: This would greatly affect BB international customers. I personally paid for MCSE and Novell certification (which continuously cost higher than the previous exam bec. of the dollar exchange rate), and I will NOT pay $20 for online exams that expire yearly and continues to popup its advertisements while I try to concentrate on my exams.
2/7/01: Anonymous says: As a holder of about 85 BB certs, I don't think it would be worth $1700 to re-certify every year. I haven't found one employer to be even remotely interested in BB certs, so I can't justify the cost. One thing that I liked about BB was the wide variety of subjects -- much more comprehensive than SkillDrill or E-Certifications. Time will tell if BB made the right move. If nothing else, it will clear out the folks with a great many "certifications" which would tend to cheapen the image of BB. I believe many of the exams were difficult (try Configuration Management or Manufacturing Industry Knowledge, if you think the tests are a joke). I agree that there are a number of exams that were designed to test basic PC skills that the vast majority of people can pass. There are also a number of exams that have failure rate approaching 90%, I suspect that people were not expecting them to be that difficult. In the short term, I believe that BB will lose the majority of its non-US patrons. And the numbers taking their exams will decline significantly after March 1st. The long-term viability will depend on how well BB can sell its credibility to where it matters most -- the HR department and/or hiring manager. Without widespread acceptance, the price for the exam is $19.95 too high.

2/15/01: Anonymous says: As a principle in an IT training program located in India, we will plan to use these test as part of our certification program. Most of our instructors have completed at least one of these certification tests. The quality is very good and the summary of test results valuable. The test for the most part are job relevant or at least as relevant as any other certification test available and in most cases are more challanging than the "official" certification tests offered by the manufacturer. Charging individuals $19.95 is not a small amount of money for most in India, especially for test takers that used these certifications for training. I agree that the number of individuals taking these exams will definitely diminish but, believe that the quality of the test taker will increases. $19.95 may be a high price for individuals that don't have the skills necessary to get certified but it is a necessary investment for professionals seeking to verify their skills, especially to US corporates. Individuals should not invest money if they do not have the knowledge to pass, but should seek qualified training programs first. I believe that building certifications for companies like Dell, IBM and Peoplesoft as well as this recent ISO9001 credentialing adds a great deal of creditability to Brainbench. As a former IS director, I would not recommend relying on HR departments to see the value of skills testing, most do not understand the difference between C++ and java or what the critical skills of the department are. Seek advise from the individuals that do the hiring, training and management of technical professionals. Knowing an individuals strengths and weaknesses allows IT managers to make informed hiring decisions when building a well balanced team.
3/3/01: Roger says: I read that BB was going to have a subscription (flat) rate available as an alternative to paying $20 for each test. Does anyone know if that is true or not?
