RHCE Goes Enterprise, Drops Exam Section

12/3/2003 -- Starting this week you may need to know Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 to earn your RHCE.

Red Hat previously confirmed via a Web Site FAQ post it that would be taking its RHCE from Red Hat Linux to Red Hat Enterprise Linux; however, several recent posts to the same FAQ confirm that the transition is now underway.

"With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, Red Hat and its training partners will begin using it for Red Hat training classes and certification exams," the FAQ now states. "This change will take place at different times in different locales. All U.S. RHCE classes given by Red Hat will be conducted on Red Hat Enterprise Linux by December 1, 2003."

Because most candidates take the RHCE or RHCT exam at the end of a training session, this announcement should mean that the new RHCE exam is now live at all US testing locations. Presumably the RHCT is now Enterprise-focused as well, since the training and tests for the two certifications are related. International candidates for Red Hat certification should call their local testing center to verify what version of the RHCE and RHCT exams are currently being offered.

Red Hat also announced via the FAQ that it has changed the format of the exam with the Enterprise Linux 3 version. The 1-hour multiple-choice section has been dropped, replaced by an extra 30 minutes of the hands-on installation and configuration lab. To pass, candidates must now earn a score of 80 or higher on the extended section.

As to why Red Hat dropped the multiple choice section, the FAQ states: "After nearly five years of delivering RHCE exams, we have concluded that the time spent during the exam asking multiple choice questions would be better spent on performance-based tasks. Analysis of the data we have collected demonstrates that the performance-based sections of the exam were far more effective than the multiple choice section." The multiple choice section remains in the RHCE Red Hat 9 exam, where available.

In the FAQ Red Hat also announced a new schedule for how long its certification titles will remain current. "All RHCEs earned on Red Hat Linux 7.3 or prior will be considered current until the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4," the FAQ states. "All RHCEs and RHCTs earned on Red Hat Linux 8.0 and 9 will remain current until the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5."

12/3/03: Moe Munee says: I think this makes this cert more valuable.
12/4/03: RHCE To Be In Florida from O-town says: It is confusing trying to figure out what the hell redhat is trying to do. You can't tell on the website what exactly they are currently testing for. Therefore, presumably a person is just suppossed to study for whatever under the sun. I have never seen it in print that they were requiring you to study X for version X. So when you start studying X, you think you might be responsible for T, U, V,W, --then X Y and Z. I started studying TWO YEARS AGO for this G.D. certification and I still can't figure it out, no help from the online training (NOT worth it). I started studying 7.3, then, 8, then 7.1., then 9, now what? In sort, it has been a nightmare. For me to pay the outrageously expensive $750 exam fee, I'd better have a chance of passing. And the cert had better be worth something or I'll run so SuSE. We are the constituents and it it time redhat knew who its friends are, and started treating us as such!
12/5/03: Red Hat Global Learning Services says: The information reported in this article concerning the requirements for earning RHCE is incorrect. It is on Section I, Troubleshooting and System Maintenance, that candidates must score 80, not on the "extended section", which presumably refers to the Installation and Configuration section that Red Hat has lengthened from 2.5 hours to 3.0. All requirements are reported correctly in the RHCE FAQ and the Exam Prep Guide, both of which are online at the Red Hat web site. RHCE To Be In Florida: The US $749 exam fee for the RHCE exam is not "outrageously expensive" relative to other IT certification exams. In order to earn MCSE, for example, one must take six one-hour exams at $125 each for a total fee of $750. RHCE is earned through one 5.5 (formerly 6.0) hour exam for $749. Information on what Red Hat tests is available in the newly-revised Exam Prep Guide at the Red Hat web site. Feel free to contact Red Hat Global Learning Services if you have any questions.
12/6/03: Wales says: RHCE requirement is changing all the time and it looks like the cost to get it is not cheap either. I am curious if there is any good study guide such as exam cram around that can help.
12/10/03: RHCE 4 life from Ohio says: I am certified on Red Hat 9- If you know your stuff, $749 is a bargain. Personally, I'd rather take an all day hands-on test (with a free lunch included) than slog through 7 "other operating system" tests, which focus on remembering braindumps. The best way to study (other than the Red Hat official course) is to setup a lab environment with two machines networked, and from scratch, configure each one for different tasks, having a buddy check it.
3/3/05: Joby Thomas from Cochin says: I need RHCE Certification.
9/15/05: UMESH from DELHI, INDIA says: SEND ME CLEAR INFORMATION ABOUT RHCE EXAM
11/5/05: anil bhure from india says: plz help me new hard disk support RED HAT LINUX 9 . i wll wait yours reply. Yours Regards, Anil
2/8/06: asger from patna says: plz send me the fee of RHCE(linux 9.0)
7/21/06: ravinder from india says: hello plz i want to know about the rhce exam
