Cisco IP Telephony Certs Double in 2003

9/22/2003 -- Cisco Systems announced today that the number of IT professionals holding its IP telephony-related specialty certifications "more than doubled" from December 31, 2002 to July 1, 2003.

The three titles included in this statistic -- IP Telephony Design Specialist, IP Telephony Support Specialist and IP Telephony Operations Specialist -- are part of Cisco's Qualified Specialist program. All three debuted in 2002.

The company did not release how many title holders there are total, nor did it disclose percentage growth per title.

In the press release for this announcement, Cisco said that the IP telephony industry as a whole grew 60 percent in 2002, and that analysts expect 40 percent annual growth through 2007. Cisco recently announced it has 10,000 IP telephony customers worldwide and delivered over 2 million Cisco IP phones to customers.

Cisco currently offers 13 specialty certifications along with its suite of "professional" titles, including the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE). More information about the specialty titles can be found here. - Becky Nagel

9/24/03: How long before says: I want a rough estimate: how long will it be before all networking jobs (sponsored by Cisco) will be outsourced overseas. I mean hell, the US government and Microsoft are outsourcing everything. Why shouldn't CISCO jump on board!
9/24/03: HMMPH! says: How long: Well, it started in the 90's and hasn't stopped. You think the easterners developed their own routers???
9/24/03: Anonymous says: Let's see...The Cert was going for 6 months before the end of the year, and after another 6 months it doubled. Must be a lot of folks jumpimg on the bandwagon. PS: CISCO built a TAC in India last year. Where were you!!
9/24/03: Anonymous says: Cisco Bah!
9/25/03: The One says: I am going for these Certs and many others. They are good to have and will help you land a job. VoIP is everywhere now so you had better be ready.
9/26/03: Don't blame you says: I can't fault anyone for going after a cert. It's up to you to decide its value.
10/9/03: angelo from Wash, DC says: If you are a techie, you don't have much of a choice. So pick your poison carefully and hope it won't hurt much. but it seems that it is going to be MS, Cisco or Oracle
10/10/03: Derek Flint from National Security Agency says: You guys who wants these certs should find a good Cisco training school who teaches these advance IP Telephony certs. You only need a current CCNA or CCNP to advance for these specialties. Routers and switches are not enough to practice. These Cisco IP telephony equipment is expensive. Search the web for sites like intenseschool or wavetech and others for training for $10,000 or less.
10/29/03: Anonymous says: In Kansas City, I am working as an AVVID engineer and making around 90K a year. Thought you all might take interest in that.
