Microsoft Windows 2003 Exams Added to MCDBA Roster

7/9/2003 -- Microsoft announced on its Web site recently that the new Windows 2003 exams currently under development can be used to fulfill the core networking requirements of the Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) on SQL Server 2000 credential.

Specifically, 70-290: Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment and 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure, make up two of the three choices available for that segment of the track. Exam 70-215: Windows 2000 Server is the other option and has been available since June 2000. Both 70-290 and 70-291 are expected to be available in August.

According to a Microsoft FAQ, the company is making the change "to provide MCDBA candidates with the opportunity to fulfill core and elective requirements while demonstrating their Windows Server 2003 expertise." The FAQ also notes that candidates who decide to take 70-290 and 7-291 for the track will no longer be able to count 70-028: and 70-019: Designing and Implementing Data Warehouses with SQL Server 7.0 towards fulfilling the MCDBA on SQL 2000 requirements. The company explains on the FAQ that it's "introducing new exam requirements to allow candidates to fulfill MCDBA requirements based on compatible technologies." By this, the company seems to acknowledge that such a unique technical incompatibility exists between SQL Server 7.0 and Windows 2003 that distinctive paths have to be carved within the MCDBA. [Microsoft has been asked for clarification and comment, but it couldn't provide them as of this posting.]

Microsoft has also added another exam, 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure, to the MCDBA roster; the exam is now an elective option. Exam 70-293 is also under development (the exam's beta testing period ends June 29).

7/9/03: Anonymous says: Oh Becky can you do something with this mo'money post already? No matter who did it, this kind of post is really useless and annoying. Could you just remove those mo'money post everytime it appears especially at the first post of every news. I'm sure many have been distracted by that.
7/9/03: Jeff from Phoenix says: I'm sure that the mo' money momos do not have any heart or brains to back up their certs, so this is the only way they can vent to compensate for their own personal shortcomings. Funny, Cisco and Microsoft have made it relatively easy to upgrade or maintain cert levels. MS is not decerifying anyone, and you can keep your current Cisco status by taking one of any number of exams, once every three years. If a hundred bucks or so is too much for some of you, stop working at AOL and get a job at 7-11. If that doesn't work, flip it and reverse it.
7/10/03: James from USA says: Right on James! Anyway, at least Microsoft is giving you a MS 2003 evaluation editon CD for free for a limited time, So you can practice on your home network for the 2 upgrade exams. I just need three more exams to fullfill my Win2K MCSE. You can get discount MS exam vouchers from 2 online sites for about $115 each. Just do a search. Some people have been delaying taking the Win 2K set exams because of the more rigorous and lengthy questions and answers as compared to the NT exams. I know I have, but I have been studying the Transcender's Testking's the old Testkiller's and MSPress and Sybex books sources. But the key is to study those test questions and answers because I find the same ones on the tests I have taken so far.

7/10/03: Tim from Atlanta says: I am glad there is a new path to certify on. I never saw the need for 2k upgrade nor did my employer. I work on 2k pro and 2k server. I am more motivated to get 2003 certified. Of course at the moment I am more concerned with my cisco certs ending in nov. Studying for the new comprehensive.
