Novell Certifications Hot Again?

9/10/2002 -- According to CRN's 2002 Certification Study, Novell may be making a comeback.

CRN reports that Novell's Certified Network Engineer (CNE) title came in at number 10 in its 2002 list of most important certifications for small solutions providers (resellers with under $10 million in annual revenue). According to the magazine, the CNE "didn't come close" to making the top 15 last year.

CRN speculated that the title may be ranking higher this year because Novell is once again requiring its partners to employ CNEs. Many technology companies, including Microsoft and Cisco, require partners to have a certain number of certified professionals on staff to attain or maintain certified partner status. Other reasons cited include renewed interest in Novell technology with the release of NetWare 6.

Novell does not release numbers regarding the size of its certification program, but it's widely assumed that the number has dramatically decreased since the program's heyday during the mid-90s.

Aside from Novell, CRN said that other certification trends it spotted for resellers this year are security and Linux-related titles. Check Point's Certified Security Expert (CCSE) title was rated number one for best return on investment.

The magazine also said that some resellers are feeling overwhelmed by the number of certifications.

CRN's 2002 Certification Study was released in August. To read the study online, click here. - B.N.

9/18/02: Michael from London says: I would have to agree with Greg re the MCNE. It took me quite a lot of extra time & effort to gain this certification & now Novell has gone & said that all you need to do is 2 exams, 1 of which you have to do to keep your CNE current, realistically 1 exam. It makes me sick to think of the effort that I put into getting my MCNE & now this. I wont be recertifying my MCNE, it will become almost as worthless as the MCSE. Am I the only MCNE pissed off with Novell ????.
9/26/02: Anonymous says: I am so tired of this debate. The one thing I do agree with. I would take a closer look at an applicant with a CNE. It shows he\she has been in the business for some time. There certainly is a flood of paper MCSE's out there. They're giving IT a bad name.
9/27/02: Anonymous says: novell is staying and that is all I have to say unlike others debating for nothing
10/2/02: Anonymous says: I don't know about it...
10/3/02: Anonymous says: Hate to bust your collective bubbles, but read the details of the article. Computer Reseller News reports that it's poll indicates Novell certs are important to SMALL IT resellers. Why? Novell is requiring a certain number of certified individuals on staff to retain program status. Did anyone read the CRN article at all? The original writer made note of higher returns, for the reseller, on a CNA cert. Why? Because Novell tends to be more admin intensive. Small VARs (those polled for this survey) tend to sell to companies with NO IT staff. Thus all that admin time returns $$$ directly back to the VAR. Yep, the only spike we will see with Novell now is all the wannabes reading this article, then rushing to the test centers to test. "Oh, Novell is hot now! I can get the MCNE with a few exams and get a $100,000 a year job!"
10/3/02: Anonymous says: For the last posting, I don't think anyone thinks he or she will make 100,000 a year in today's economy. Also, I dont think it is proper to referr to those that find Novells recent promotion as wanabies. There will be more Novell opportunities in the future because of their technology. I know of a a bunch of places off hand that use Netware 6 over Windows 2000 due to its reliability and its ability to connect from anywhere.
10/4/02: Anonymous says: The Same CRN article said that Microsoft is a "hot cert." There was no mention of Red Hat. Do you think there was a payoff? Or more likely, since the survey focused on SMALL IT providers, it was a statement of the market, many small buisnesses are still using Novell. That doesn't translate into the same buisness upgrading to Novell 6 anytime soon. But you can keep chasing the rainbow.
10/4/02: Anonymous says: Amazing how the two camps MS and Novell Certified professionals just can't come to terms on much. The title of the above article has a question mark in it. Are the Novell Certs hot again? Not sure Anyone but novell can answer that. I manage a large mixed win2k and netware environment. In response the (9/13 post) I require my senior staffers to have both MCSE and CNE. That is the ONLY WAY.... someone here can become promoted to senior staff. I would question the intelligence of anyone hiring MCSEs OR CNEs just to sit the helpdesk. Find Someone with BOTH certs... and you will find someone suitable to be called Network Professional.
10/4/02: Anonymous says: The truth is that it is rare in any larger corporate environment to have one network system do everything. Many use Novell's file and print server, while using Windows application or Database serving power while using Unix as a web server. While the IT industry has seen a flood of MCSE's and CNE's having those credentials is most certainly meaningful, yet do nothing if they stand alone without any type of Pc experience even at the base level. Novell's Netware 6 is not just a revised strategy as opposed to just a network operating system, the entire company, if you follow them, is changing things dramatically. One key change being the licensing they are going to be implementing soon. Microsoft today announced even more security flaws in every version of their Windows. It is hard to imagine how a company like Novell can not capitilize on public noticed like that from Microsoft. I think Novell is in fact gaining ground but as any solid corporate turn around , it takes a while, doesnt happen by the end of the 3rd quarter. Also anymore having an MCSE and a CNE in many cases doesnt hold as much water standing alone as they would along a B.S or Masters in IT. For all they nay-sayers, Novell will turn around and have its presense felt and .Net will have a tough time getting off the ground since even MS admitted that it has had little success with it this far. Quoted as being a "boon-doggle"
10/8/02: Elvis from Memphis says: Novell and Disco are making a comeback, BABY!!!!
