EXCLUSIVE: Sun To Version Java Certs

6/26/2002 -- Rick Bunzel, general manager of certification at Sun Microsystems, told CertCities.com yesterday that the company is instituting a new version policy for its Java certifications.

The policy will take effect later this summer when Sun releases a new version of its Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) exam. At that time, instead of retiring the older exam as has been done in the past, Sun will split the certification into two tracks:

  • SCJP for Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, version 1.4 (new exam)
  • SCJP for Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, version 1.2 (old exam)

Bunzel said the same policy will be applied to Sun's Certified Java Developer and Certified Java Architect titles when new exams are released for these certifications this fall. "We're listening to our audience," Bunzel commented. "Companies often standardize on a particular version for a period of time...We don't want to penalize those working on 1.2."

According to Bunzel, the older versions of a certification will remain available as long as there is enough candidate interest, just like with its Solaris certification tracks (Sun currently offers a 7 and 8 track, with a 9 track coming in September).

Objectives for the new SCJP 1.4 exam will be posted on the Sun Web site within the next few weeks.

6/27/02: Peter from Abbotsford, Canada says: Sun's policy of not retiring exams just because it has come out with new versions is very sensible; we have many Oracle Certifieds in our organization who cannot keep in pace with the Oracle's retiring of exams- as we are still in the older versions- and hence we do not care upgrading until we are working with newer versions.
6/27/02: Becky Nagel from Web Editor says: UPDATE: Sun has posted the objectives for the 1.4 exam. They're available on the SCJP page of the Sun certification Web site!
6/30/02: Scooby Doo says: The real reason for the introduction of the 1.4 exam is the hope of more revenue. In reality however, holding a 1.4 certification shows that you are a java NewBee. Good luck. Me, I am a sun certified programmer for the java2 platform, sun ..developer.. etc. I have been in java since 1.1.8.
6/30/02: William Brogden from Austin, TX says: I doubt that Sun nets any significant income on exams after the cut for Prometric and the cost of administration is taken out. On the other hand I imagine the income from courses is significant.
7/6/02: David Brafford says: Similar comments were made by Sun when the Java 2 Programmer Exam was introduced. Then, gradually, the tone changed until after about a year of them both being available, the older exam was retired. But they gave quite a bit of notice on the retirement - the rug was not pulled out from people. 7/8/02: fg from fdsg says: shgfhds
7/8/02: Anil Bhaskarwar from Wipro Technologies, Bangalore, India says: I liked the way Sun is doing instead of retiring, keeping the older version as somtimes our project not need the new version syllabus, recently I have passed SCJP with 88% and sincerely I want to share some books for the cerfication.
7/24/02: Anonymous says: I am currrently 1.4 Certified. The test is very similar to the 1.2 Test. Just learn asserts like the back of your hand. :) (i took the beta test)
8/1/02: kripal from Bangalore, India says: i have passed the 1.4 beta exam . It is much more better and focussed more on OOPS concepts compared to 1.2 exam . Taking out AWT and IO from java certification is a great idea. good job sun!!!
8/8/02: May from USA says: Could anyone please let me know if the 1.4 beta exam is still available and where can I get it?
