Coriolis Suspends Fire Sale

4/17/2002 -- Coriolis' so-called "Spring Break" sale is over.

The company, which is currently being dissolved by its majority owner, Haights Cross, was offering up to 75 percent off products through its Coriolis.com and ExamCram.com Web sites. The sale was supposed to last through April 24. However, the company posted the following message on its Web site late last week: "Due to the overwhelming success of our 'Spring Break Promotion' we must temporarily suspend taking any additional orders through our bookstore. After the orders currently placed are shipped to our customers, we will restart the sale with available Coriolis inventory."

"We wanted to handle it as long as we could," Tim McEwen, CEO of Haights Cross, told CertCities.com regarding the sale. "Because we're down to very few staff [and] it takes processing for each order...to handle all the orders by April 30 [the last day for the site, and the company], we needed to end it."

As for the sale itself, many who did take advantage have not yet recieved the books they ordered. When asked about slow shipment, McEwen said "All orders will be filled."

"We fully intend to ship all orders," he continued. "The only reason I could see we wouldn't is if we were out of stock...but, really, what's hurting everyone in this industry [is] returns and too much inventory."

According to McEwen, the shipping for the orders is being handled by an outside distribution firm.

As for the shutdown of Coriolis itself, Haights Cross chairman Peter Quandt told CertCities.com, "So far it's going pretty well.... we're making good progress in working with the companies and individuals involved, trying to sort this out."

Quandt also denied rumors that Hungry Minds, a division of Wiley, will be acquiring the Exam Cram line. "We've been contacted by a number of companies, but not Wiley," he said.

Wiley dismissed the rumors as well. "It's not true," a spokesperson told us, "Wiley will not be purchasing any Coriolis titles." - B.N.

4/17/02: Anonymous says: I ordered some books from Coriolis on April 5 and have yet to receive any of them. I did email the company and they promptly replied that the books I ordered were temporarily out of stock but they expect a shipment next week and my order will be shipped then. I hope they really plan on fulfilling all the orders they've taken. I'm hoping that the books I ordered will help as a secondary study material for some tests I'm planning on taking. Has anyone received anything from them?
4/17/02: Ken from Wisconsin says: I ordered books on the 4th or 5th of April, and received them on April 16th. I tracked the UPS package ID, and the package left Tempe AZ on April 10th and was shipped via UPS ground, although I thought Coriolis did charge a lot for the shipping.
4/17/02: Anonymous says: Same for me I have made calls and emails and have been told my shipments are on their way however, they never sent me a tracking number. If I dont receive my books "very" soon I will be contacting my credit card company to see what we can do.
4/18/02: Chris from Beaufort, SC says: I ordered on April 4th, Received 1 book on April 16th and the rest on April 17th. They over charged for shipping, but they are basing it on a flat rate of $3.50 per book. When you add that to what you paid for the book and compare what you WOULD pay for the book, I got some awesome deals.
4/18/02: Cdog from Carlsbad says: I just think it sucks. The best exam books around, gone. Is it really getting better, this economy???
4/18/02: MUpdike from Roseville, MI says: I ordered on April 3rd and got the books on the 16th, so be patient they will come...as far as the whole issue, this is a terrible loss for the IT community. My only hope is that someone will come along and obtain the rights and continue the examcram product and it's usefullness. Saddly, Mike Updike
4/18/02: Curt from Greenville,SC, says: I purchased two products on April 4th and received them on April 17th, the shipping was $5.53 for an order of $22.48, the retail price on the Win 2K Prep book was $49.99 and on a Network plus audio set was $39.99. $90 of materials for $28 is excellent. No doubt they were swamped with orders, their voicemail said they were being delayed about 10 days shipping due to the overwhelming response.
4/18/02: bernard from boston says: I ordered books on April 4.On April 17,I emailed the company to find out the status of my order.I received a response informing me that the books will be arriving April 18.They also gave me the UPS tracking order, which was so nice of them.
4/18/02: Major Payne from USA says: I also ordered books from them on April 5th. I haven't received them yet, but have been assured that they will be forthcoming. I am truly disheartened by this event since I have used their study guides for the majority of my certification preparations. I hope they are bought by another company so that they can continue their fine work.
4/24/02: uniceller says: I ordered on April 4, (6 books) and have not seen any of them as of April 24. No replies back yet for status requests.
