CompTIA Issues Exam Retake Policy

6/27/2001 -- The Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) has introduced new restrictions on retaking its exams, including implementing a waiting period for repetitive failures.

Effective immediately, anyone who fails a CompTIA certification exam two times in a row must wait 30 days before making another attempt. Also, anyone who has taken an exam and passed must wait 12 months before taking that exam again.

Director of Certification Fran Linhart said that CompTIA is implementing the policy as part of ongoing measures to protect the reputation and security of the organization's exams. "This brings our policy in line with other certification providers [like] Microsoft and Cisco," Linhart said. "[Without these restrictions] a candidate who is not at the skill level of an exam could, despite the number of questions, take it over and over again until they passed. The numbers are very, very small, but it does happen...We're going to stop that."

Linhart also said that it is an issue of security. "We know that sometimes, if a company wants to learn about our content, they'll send someone in to take [an exam] 10 to 15 times," she explained. "The retake policy is a way for us to continually protect our intellectual property."

In the same announcement, CompTIA emphasized its 12-month suspension policy for those who have violated its candidate guidelines. According to the CompTIA Web site, anyone who violates CompTIA's Candidate Conduct Policy will not be allowed to register for another CompTIA exam for at least 12 months.

6/27/01: Anonymous says: At last, CompTIA has taken this necessary step. Kudos to this organization. Much as I will ruffle some feathers, I concur that this is a very important step in protecting intellectual property. Over 15 years in exams development have taught me at least this.
6/28/01: Anonymous says: Kudos, These implementations were very much needed to preserve the integrity of CompTIA's exam. process // If this upsets some people, maybe they just need to study
6/28/01: DrBenway says: i reckon anyone registering again and again for comptia exams must have a lot of money and really REALLY want to pass the exam. at £185 (irish) a pop it certainly ain't cheap (that's about $250 to you yanks). good move to bring the exam retake pol in line with others but please lads reduce the price - it's ridiculous!!
6/28/01: dj says: the questions are really vague and the exams are expensive...how about a rewrite costing a little less than the original exam?people dont go and write exams to fail,so it kinda gets expensive and some people have to wait till the end of the month again anyway to go and do a rewrite...and please comptia, brush up on the questions will ya!(proudly A+ certified after OS rewrite)
6/28/01: Dan I. says: I think it's a good idea....This should keep the test ( as hard as it is already ) from being compromised even further. Knowing how expensive it is, and the thought of not being able to just keep taking it over should make (some) people study harder and possibly know the material when they arive at the test center. Isn't that why you're taking the test? (proudly A+ certified....without return trips...)
6/28/01: eS-Jay says: I beleive if a person has passed an exam they should NOT be allowed to retake that exam no matter what. Also, the cost should be reduced for retakes even if it is marginally. Finally, Kudos to all of you who write the exams and remember, "Vague questions does not help us" Generic and product specific questions are the way to go.
6/28/01: Rosey says: Take the test (any test) once. and be done with it. You either sit for the test knowing the material, or you study until you do. Ample material is available from many sources. However, experience goes a long way. The test is not difficult if you prepare. (A+ Certified with pride)
7/2/01: Bill says: I wonder if a person has passed an exam WHY would they want to take it again. I found the A+ exam to be very difficult even though I passed both. I have been in this field along time and have multiple certifications. I believe this experience greatly enhanced my ability to pass. From what I have read and heard the old test was much easier. I had the impression that an A+ certification would expire just as MCSE and CCNA do. If I had known once you pass you are "A+ for life" I would have taken the adaptive test. To continue with your creditability as Microsoft and Cisco do this would be a great place to start. I do think that the cost is way out of line. I think that for the first time takers the cost should be drastically reduced. More in the line of $150.00 total for both exams. Then for retakes raise the cost. This would have everyone better prepared before scheduling an exam.
6/1/02: Airman Corky from USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) says: I DIDNT STUDY AT ALL, AND I STILL PASSED, CERTIFICATIONS ARE SUCH A JOKE! CANT WAIT FOR COLLEGE TO START, SO THAT I COULD GET A REAL DEGREE.
11/15/06: Anonymous says: what if you failed it the third time will you be allowed to take it again after 30 days
