Cisco To Require Photos, Digital Signatures for All Cert Testing

12/5/2007 -- Cisco Systems announced this week that it has instituted a policy whereby all candidates will have a digital photo taken and provide a digital signature at the test center before being allowed to sit for any Cisco exam.

The new policy will be rolled out worldwide at Pearson Vue testing centers -- the exclusive test delivery vendor for Cisco -- during the next 12 months.

"This new layer of identity authentication will help to ensure candidate identity and result in increased assurance that individuals are presenting accurate certification records in the marketplace," the company said on its Web site.

The policy appears to take aim at those who may attempt to have others take their exams for them -- e.g., "proxy testing." However, it could also help track those who are taking or retaking exams for other purposes, including "braindumping" -- memorizing questions for selling or giving away to other candidates.

"Cisco conducted a study to determine which security processes and technologies would be most effective, without adversely affecting the efficiency of the check-in procedure. After analyzing the results from this study and examining candidate feedback, improved methods for candidate authentication were determined," reads the FAQ on the Web site. "The collection of digital photos and digital signatures during the admissions process was implemented to ensure candidate identity, resulting in increased assurance that individuals are presenting accurate certification records in the marketplace. The authentication technology is designed to protect the integrity of Cisco certification and combat exam fraud. "

A Pearson Vue statement said that the company estimates the process will add approximately 5 minutes to the testing check-in time. "We're dedicated to candidate authentication procedures that allow us to quickly verify a test taker's identity, without compromising candidate privacy and convenience," the company stated.

Cisco said that this is just one of many steps it will be taking in the future to further improve test security.

Currently, Cisco is the only major IT certification vendor to require such procedures.

12/6/07: Robert Williams from USA says: Great news!! It looks as if the battle against braindumps has finally taken an offensive stance. Anyone else see checkmate in 3?
12/10/07: Anonymous says: If they are going to require a signature and a photo for the written, does this mean they're going to require DNA samples to take the lab
12/10/07: Anonymous says: Is Cisco providing the digital camera and signature equipment to the testing centers to accomplish this identification process? Or does the candidate have to spend additional fees just to get this requirement before testing? If I pay for this identification requirement will it be deducted from the certification fee? Sounds good but, does the candidate for testing get the short end of the stick here.....
12/11/07: Chris Heffner from www.certified-labs.com says: There really question is how is the digital photo and signature securely acquired in the first place. What is going to be the authentication process to validate the credentials from the test candidate when the picture and digital signature are taken?
12/11/07: Anonymous says: Cisco's reason for their new security requirements is bogus. There must be another reason for the collection of pictures and digital signatures. I see no mention of the measures for certification of the underlying ID Cards, Passports, etceteras. A picture and digital signature don't mean crap if the underlying credentials are not certified. So, Cisco must have another reason for this new requirement or they have failed to disclose the complete process. Either way, this is too invasive and will probably cost all of us too much money. And lastly, (1) where will the pictures be stored and how will the be used, (2) How will the digital signature be generated; from the picture ?
12/11/07: Anonymous says: Most important to all of this is the security of the digital photo and the signature. As we have learned in the retail marketplace, the security of digital signatures is nil. At what point is Cisco going to guarantee the security of the signature and the photos. Identity theft via Cisco. Checkfree and all the other signature pad vendors have not demonstrated their ability to protect what is captured, how is Cisco going to do that through all the vendors that are hosting the Pearson Vue centers.....
12/13/07: Christopher Bell from Glossop, UK says: What am I missing here? Having run both Vue an dPrometric testing centres, candidates were required to turn up with some Government issued photo ID - passport, drivers license, etc.. We had a simple "no ID, no exam, no exceptions" policy. It seemed to work well for us.
12/14/07: Anonymous says: What does this do that showing your driving licence or passport doesnt already do. Yet more data capturing by the Americans, I certainly wouldn't trust them with this information. Perrhaps I will have to reconsider future re certifications
