Vista Exams Go Back to Beta Testing

2/14/2007 -- According to the most recently issued MCP Newsflash, Microsoft's Learning Group has decided to put a few of its new-generation MCP exams for Vista back into development phase. Affected are exams for the IT Professional level certifications: 70-621 Pro: Upgrading your MCDST Certification to MCITP Enterprise Support; 70-622 Pro: Microsoft Desktop Support-Enteprise; and 70-623 Pro: Microsoft Desktop Support-Consumer.

"In the interest of maintaining the quality of Microsoft Certifications ... we need to add content" to those exams, said the group in the e-mail.

Exam 70-621 was originally beta tested between Dec. 20, 2006 and Jan. 12. 2007, with availability originally slated for late January. Exam 70-623 originally went under the beta microscope between Jan. 26 and Feb. 8.

According to the exam objective guides, these exams will head back into test development, with betas spanning March and April. The exams are expected to go live in May, according to the MCP Newsflash.

Unaffected by the delay is exam 70-620, which was generally available mid-January (see "First Windows Vista Exam Now Live" in the News archive).

On another note, Exam 70-624 makes its debut on Valentine's Day. The exam isn't for the fainthearted, though, with Microsoft recommending candidates for the exam to have expertise managing desktop deployments and migrations using many of the business deployment tools Microsoft provides in Vista, as well as its Business Desktop Deployment Workbench and Application Compatibility Toolkit. Those who pass the exam immediately earn the MCTS: Deploying and Maintaining Vista Client and Office System 2007 Desktops certification. -Michael Domingo

2/14/07: Anonymous says: I don't think I'm going to retake the exams again. This new requirements from Microsoft shows a lack of professionalism from them ...I'm trying to believe that we are not some laboratory rat for Microsoft ....
2/14/07: Potter says: I spent most of the Christmas 2006 period studying hard for the 70-621 upgrade. I aggravated a lot of family and friends by not seeing them because I was so determined to take / pass this beta exam. Weeks later I now find out that all the effort I put in was for nothing…. A lot of us went out of our way to take these beta exams and now MS isn’t going to give us anything back. I’m personally less than impressed by the whole way this situation has been dealt with.
2/14/07: Ken W says: Is there anyway we can find out the scores of the beta test that we've taken? I'm not looking forward to resitting the exam, if I passed - however if I failed the exam then of course I would like to resit. Also can we have a "proper" reason why we have to re-take the exams? The reason of "wanting to produce good exams" isn't a proper reason, considering that I'm going to have to take more time off work again.
2/14/07: Anonymous says: I spent a vast amount of time studying for the beta exam, to a large personal cost of myself and to think it would be for nothing is incredibly defeating. Now I've started focusing my efforts towards exchange 2003 study only to find I'm going to have to re-study Vista again. Bravo Microsoft!
2/14/07: Anonymous says: What 's a MESS and make everythinf one unhappy. I don't think it is a WIN-WIN Situation for the Beta testers of 71-621 & 71-622 and MSL. Not too sure whether this is the 1st time MLS to ask beta testers to re-take the revised version of the beta test (take the test 2nd time) but the decision from MLS management is not prudent and professional at all. I understand we beta tester don't get paid but do those beta exams voluntarily. But if MLS treat us like lab-rats and we have to take time off from regular work for it. This actually mess up a lot of our studying plan for other MCP exams planning.
2/17/07: Anonymous says: "Is there anyway we can find out the scores of the beta test that we've taken?" Unfortunately, no. As soon as I saw that MCP email, I called Microsoft to ask about it. We will never know how we scored on the original betas -- it's like it never happened. :-( I think they should at least send us our score reports so we know whether we passed! Everyone who did take the exam in the first beta will receive an email with a reserved seat (held for 72 hours from time of email) to retake that exam in the second beta. After the 72 hours is up, everyone who received an invitation email the first time around will recieve an invitation again, to compete for the seats of re-takers who didn't sign up in that 72 hours. The new betas for 70-622 will be held in mid March, and for 70-621 in late March. (I didn't find out about 70-623.) The new plan for release dates is 70-621 on May 15, 70-622 on May 16, and 70-623 on May 17.
