Like Windows Vista, Exam Almost Here (But Not Quite)

10/25/2006 -- You knew it was coming: A new exam for Windows Vista has appeared on the Pearson Vue site. The information seems preliminary for now, as there is no listed date for beta availability, which is a good indication that the exam still percolates in development at the Redmond campus. (Microsoft makes no comments on exams in development.)

Here's what information we can glean so far: The exam will be entitled "70-620 TS: Windows Vista Configuring." Confirmation of the name can be found elsewhere, in the form of a book already in the works at Sybex, MCTS: Windows Vista Client Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-620, by James Chellis (ISBN, 0470108819, MSRP $49.99). (Availability of the book is expected in February 2007, but it's already listed on several retail sites, including Amazon.com and Bookpool.com.) Based on earlier interviews with Microsoft's Learning Group, the exam price will likely remain at $125 here in the U.S.

It's expected that Microsoft will make any formal announcements regarding Windows Vista-based MCTS and MCITP certifications when Windows Vista makes its official debut. Vista is expected to be released to manufacturing in several weeks.

For more on Windows Vista, see the News links on Redmond magazine's Windows Client portal page.

To view the listing for Exam 70-620, you'll need to log in to the Pearson Vue testing site.

10/30/06: Wildcat Dude from Southern United States - Smyrna, TN says: Long ago I posted a link for IT Professionals at Certcities.com as I knew this day was coming. Having a MS Technet Plus subscription really really helps out and now its even cheaper than when I signed up. Guys, if you want or going to get MS certifications, the subscription will be a huge investment and it gives you the betas and releases including training material. Although I don't see very many companies migrating to Vista, it'll only be a matter of time. I'm interested to see what parts of Vista will be on the exam as in the past with XP they haven't really tested on the home versions before and I don't really see them doing that now since certifications are generally business based. I generally don't get excited about certifications in general (especially in regards to useless comptia certs) but I feel all geared up to take this one with some more prodding and kneading of this product. Who knows, if you're one of the 1st 1000 to get this cert, when companies do want to migrate, you'll be a hot prospect for some company to help them. 11/2/06: Luke Vidler says: Hi Guys. I sat the beta version of the exam yesterday. The exam details are here: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/71-620.mspx Overall its a good exam that tests a lot of everyday desktop like issues. There were some minor annoyances with pedantic MS naming ie remote desktop vs remote admin vs remote assistance. Its just remote admin software, its nothing new, so just call it one thing!! Like why complicate things? Anyway, looks like vista builds nicely on the strength of XP, which by now everyone has to agree is a good OS. I think its a good exam for anyone who will be using vista on a daily basis, which is all you desktop support dudes in about 2 years from now.
11/9/06: Oh Sung Kwon from South Korea says: Wow! I need a MS Vista certification too. Everybody is fighting.~ Must be a Compleatly catch the certification. Thanks.
11/20/06: Sameer Parkar from Bahrain says: Are there any free Voucher for Vista Beta Exams
