I tried to install a program but the Windows installer failed in the middle of the install. Now I can't reinstall the program because it's partially installed.

12/2/2009 -- I tried to install a program but the Windows installer failed in the middle of the install. Now I can't reinstall the program because it's partially installed. I can't remove the program either because the installation never completed. What do I do now?
Answer:
You can try Microsoft's Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to resolve some of the issues with the Windows installer. Keep in mind, however, that the utility won't remove programs; it will simply remove the installation files so you can reinstall or uninstall a program. The utility works with all 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. You just need to make sure that you run the utility with Administrative privileges.
The ReadMe file that comes with the utility explains what can cause problems with the installer. For example, a corrupted computer registry, an interruption of a program that uses Windows installer (e.g., Office 2003), or multiple instances of the same setup program running simultaneously can all cause problems with the Windows installer.
To download the utility and for more details, check out KB article 290301.
Now, for a couple of caveats. Microsoft warns that you shouldn't use this utility with 2007 Office system products. For Office 2007 removal issues, check out KB article 928218.
Also, Microsoft provides this utility "as-is" and you may need to install some or all programs on your computer that used Windows Installer because it makes permanent changes to your system that can't be reversed.
