Event ID 1054 Error from Source Userenv
Why am I getting the following error on my Windows Server 2003?

by Zubair Alexander

6/25/2008 -- Why am I getting the following error on my Windows Server 2003? The event viewer is bombarded with these errors every five minutes:

Event ID: 1054

Source: Userenv

Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted). Group Policy processing aborted.

Solution:
This error could be a result on an incorrect entry for the preferred DNS server; the TCP/IP properties are invalid or the DNS is unreachable.

It's not unusual for this error to cause the client computer to take a very long time to log on. To resolve this issue, you should correct the DNS address in the TCP/IP properties.
