New Oracle 9i Program Officially Unveiled: Features Tiers, Online Test, Lab Exam

12/5/2001 -- Earlier this week Oracle officially announced its 9i DBA certification program, which features a new, three-tier structure, as well as online testing and a hands-on lab component.

As we reported last week, the 9i DBA program consist of three levels: Oracle Certified Associate (OCA), Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) and Oracle Certified Master (OCM).

Oracle says that the OCA DBA program is for those with "apprentice-level" skills. To achieve this, candidates must pass two exams -- Introduction to Oracle 9i and Oracle 9i Database. The Introduction exam can be taken online through Oracle, instead of at testing center. This is the first time such an exam has been offered by this vendor.

The new 9i DBA OCP requires four exams-- the two mentioned above, plus Oracle 9i Database: Fundamentals II and Oracle 9i Database: Performance Tuning.

To become Master certified, candidates must first achieve the OCP DBA, then attend two "advanced" Oracle technology training courses. After that, candidates must pass a hands-on lab exam held in an Oracle testing environment. Full details on these lab exams have yet to be released.

12/5/01 - Sondra  says: This is great news--I am teaching the Oracle Internet Academy in the high school and have 17 teens learning data modeling and SQL. Many don't even drive yet, so getting a testing center would be a nightmare. Now they can all do the test in the classroom. I think the new levels better represents those certify by reading a book and taking a test--the more advanced levels require actual demonstration of skills, not just multiple choices.
12/6/01 - CHELSEA  LOGAN says: I don't understand the OCA "online tests through Oracle, no Prometric".... what? OCA is BrainBench-like? Too bad, that's good news for CHEATERS.
12/6/01 - Anonymous says: I doubt seriously that on-line means anything but on-line at a ProMetric/VUE center vs. hands-on at a lab
12/7/01 - anshul  tiwari says: Thats great ...at least there is a way to separate ppl with exp and starters ....on the other hand its costly ......

2/13/02 - Randall Burns  from http://www.outlander.com says: I am a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator(MCDBA) with some Oracle experience. I recently started working towards my OCP. I've found the official study materials (two books by James Couchman and a the official questions from http://www.selftestsoftware.com) to be adequate to study for the first exam). I also like the fact that Oracle now has a certification that is geared towards people that are less experienced with Oracle(so folks don't have to become an expert in Oracle to have something to show for their efforts).

Announcing OCA by oracle is good news for the novice like me
