MOUS Program Hits 500,000 Milestone

2/7/2002 -- The Microsoft Office User Specialist certification program announced last month that it has granted its 500,000th certification.

"We are pleased with the popularity of the MOUS program as a means of measuring worker proficiency," said Barbara Decker, training and certification product manager, Microsoft, regarding the milestone.

The MOUS program, designed to certify users and support personnel in Microsoft Office programs, began in 1997. Certiport, the organization that manages the program for Microsoft, told CertCities that it issued that milestone certification to a test taker in Japan in January.

According to Certiport, the program issues more than 20,000 certificates each month. About 20 percent of those certified are IT professionals, the company told us.

2/9/02 - Anonymous says: Not too suprising, I have 9 of them: 4 to become a MOUS Master in Office97 and 5 to become a MOUS Master in Office 2000. Why not dig a little deeper? How many different individuals have at least one certification? How many MOUS Masters are there? Which certification has the most/least holders? Which certification has the highest failure rate (i.e. the hardest exam to pass)? -FR
2/10/02 - Anonymous says: same question I want to ask!
2/11/02 - Bobo  says: Yes, more statistical info as in the first comment. Also how many Master Instructors and how is MOUS doing in different countries. Master in Access would be fine to see. Also test for VBA programming.
2/11/02 - Michael Styles  from Atlanta, Georgia says: I'm interested in the same. There's no accurate data about the MOUS program. I used to be able to get some info occasionally from the folks who manned the old MOUS helpdesk before the latest re-organization and new Master Instructor cert was unloaded on us. I've got 9 individual certs also; two more if you count the two MOUS Master certs; two more again if you count the two MOUS Master Instructor certs. Does that mean I have 13/500,000 of the total certs they've awarded's a shame there's no site to go to like the Microsoft Certified Professional site that keeps track of how many people have what.
2/13/02 - T  says: I agree lets have a better breakdown than this.
2/14/02 - Annette D.  from Miami, FL says: I am asking the same question. Why aren't any of the jobs advertised by companies (for example: an advertisement for an administrative assistant) asking for any of these certifications? There is no way of telling if the applicant really is competent in any of the programs. The tests that they give you are not very thorough. I think that we need more exposure.
2/14/02 - Jeff Riley  from Indianapolis says: I'm curious what resources you use to train for the MOUS exams? Would you purchase one of our best-selling Training Guide books if it covered the exam objectives, key terms, practice exams, and test-simulation software on the CD? Please email me directly at [email protected]. Thanks!
2/26/02 - Anonymous says: From how the article reads it states 500,000 certification not individuals. So I have 10 of the cerfications. Lets have a better breakdown of how many are certified on each application and what level. In addition to how many are Master certified.
5/6/02 - Lars  says: Does it makes sence to have such a cert? Is it ask in the business?
5/7/02 - Michael Styles  from Atlanta says: I recently achieved MOUS Master Instructor status in Office XP. I was already a Master Instructor in Office 2000 and 97. I asked the MOUS Master Program Manager for stats as to how many people were Master Instructor certified in all three Office versions. I was told these stats could not be released since doing so would violate "confidentiality."
