UPDATED: Cisco Releases New CCNA Exam with Hands-On Tasks

3/13/2002 -- Cisco Press announced today that Cisco's certification program has replaced CCNA exam #640-507 with a new version, #640-607, which features hands-on simulation questions.

"With this new exam, Cisco has introduced performance-based testing elements that will measure a candidate's ability to accomplish certain tasks in a time-critical setting," Cisco Press said in a press release sent out this morning. "Cisco Systems' goal is not to make the exams more difficult, but rather to present a testing environment that assesses both a candidate's practical and theoretical mastery of CCNA objectives."

The new CCNA exam still includes multiple-choice questions, but also features interactive questions which will "require cut-and-paste solutions, IP addressing input, and networking simulation comprehension," the release said. Cisco Press also said that although Cisco hasn't changed the objectives for the exam, the entire multiple-choice question pool has been replaced.

Although the press release sent yesterday said that the new version would immediately replace the old version, there does appear to be an exception: Cisco told CertCities.com today that anyone who registered for the CCNA of the exam before March 12 will still take the 507 version that they originally registered for, as long as the actual exam date is before April 23. Any new registrations for the CCNA will be for version 607, however.

Aside from Cisco's CCIE exam, which takes place in an actual lab, this new CCNA exam is the company's first to include hands-on questions. In an e-mail sent to Cisco certification candidates, the company expressed its intention of adding such interactive elements to its other exams.

In conjunction with the announcement, Cisco Press said it has released two new self-study titles, to replace its crop of 640-507 books:

  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide
  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit

A special bundle of preparation material will be available from Cisco Press in April.

CCNA, which stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate, is Cisco System's most popular entry-level certification, and requires passing one exam. The CCNA exam's last major update came in November 1999, when #640-507 was released.

Current title holders won't have to take the new exam to retain their certifications. Cisco has a policy of keeping the CCNA credential valid for three years from the time a title holder obtains it.

More information about the new exam, including a demo of the new interactive elements, can be found on Cisco's Web site (here and here).

We will continue to update this story as more details become available. Those looking for more information may also want to attend a chat about the new exam scheduled for March 27 at 4 p.m. on TCPMag.com, in which trainer Andy Barkle will answer your questions. More information on this chat can be found here. -B.N.

Current CertCities.com user Comments for "UPDATED: Cisco Releases New CCNA Exam with Hands-On Tasks"
3/13/02 - John  from N. Ireland says: Boo Hoo!!! I only purchased the Cisco CCNA Exam #640-507 Certification Guide book from Amazon two days ago. Thanks for the advance warning Cisco.
3/13/02 - Arthur  from U.S says: To Bad. That is the nature of Computers. Things change - Fast and without warning. Get used to it or get out of the industry.
3/13/02 - Grieta de Bruyn  from South Africa says: I will also be taking the exam in 2 weeks time and think that it is a good idea...but some sort of waring would have been nice!! It's bad enough that the pass rate is higher now this as well..!
3/13/02 - Mike H  from USA says: I think this is a great thing for CCNAs and prospective CCNAs alike. Giving us another way to validate our certification and back it up with real world knowledge. Just one more way to keep their certs from losing value and keep up the respect we have worked hard to gain.
3/13/02 - Anonymous says: Get a grip people. If you are looking for certs to validate you and give you respect you're a freak. Get a college degree (or another one) instead.
3/13/02 - Mike H  from USE says: Thanks anonymous for your inspiring comments- I didn't say the cert validates me- i said the toughness fo getting a cert validates the cert as something of value- by the way- if you don't like certs- why are you reading this? Oh yeah, I have three degrees and three other major industry certs. I was trying to give some perspective about this change to the program- not endorse certs as a panacea to self-actualization
3/13/02 - Julius   from Holland says: To anybody who thinks that a college degree is worth something in the networking industry, I feel sorry for his waste of time trying to get something that is nothing more that a way of thinking that does not have anything to do with what you are doing. I am a CCIE and beleive never been to university like the rest of my brothers. And I do work with people that have been to university hier in Holland and one of the guys is still trying to get his CCIE which he has all ready felt 4 times. By de way I am not saying that CCIE is what you should get to be respected. You just need hands on. That is all what a manager in Europe will ask you for. I have seen a lot of university smart kids no even being able to cross the door at the telecom company I work for. Success and lots of hands on.
3/13/02 - Bob   from Oregon says: Yep, another unprofessional, poorly timed and agregious move by Cisco. This rates right up there with raising the passing score on 640-507 so that some of my students last year who passed have scores lower than some who failed this year. Congratulations Cisco, your acting more like Microsoft every year. We'll remember that.
3/13/02 - Bob  from Oregon says: Cisco's own site has some conflicting info that does state 640-507 WILL BE available until April 23 2002. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/endoflife.htm
3/13/02 - Becky Nagel  from CertCities.com Web Editor says: Hi Bob -- Thanks for the tip -- we will check that out (wasn't on the materials sent to us!) -- Becky
3/13/02 - Becky Nagel  from Web Editor says: I've got a call into Cisco right now...Should be getting confirmation from the cert group within the hour. If true (and looks like it is), there was an error in the original release we got. We'll get the story updated as soon as we know something for sure. -- Becky
3/13/02 - Becky Nagel  from Web Editor, CertCities.com says: OK -- Just got official confirmation from Cisco. Here's the deal. If and ONLY if you've already registered for 607-507 version (which you had to have done before yesterday), you can take that version -- up to April 23. (Or you can change to 607, if you choose) HOWEVER, they're not taking any NEW registrations for the 507 version of the exam: therefore, if you haven't yet registered for the CCNA, you will be taking the new version. I hope that clarifies things more. I'll make changes to story above to reflect that now. If you have questions, feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] -- If I don't know or can't point you to the answer today, I've got an interview scheduled with Cisco on Friday -- glad to take your question to them. -- Becky Nagel, Web Editor, CertCities.com, [email protected]
3/13/02 - Vince  from California says: I could have taken the test a few weeks ago, but still have not, so I blame myself - but if you are just now finishing a Cisco class or have recently purchased 507 study materials, than I think you have been unfairly cheated without forwarning from Cisco
3/13/02 - Anonymous says: Whats up with all the complaining in the industry? Get over it, things change, people get cheated all the time. This is a good thing for all CCNA's and Tech departments, you dont know how many people I have dealt with that have no degrees but a handfull of certs and no Real World Experience, its a pain. WTG Cisco ;)
3/13/02 - Michael  from Colorado says: Anonymous states that "people get cheated all the time." Whether people do or don't doesn't make it right. Common courtesy suggests that some advance notice would be the more correct behavior. Notwithstanding the lack of courtesy on Cisco's part, the objectives haven't changed and the study materials purchased will still help prepare the prospective exam taker. Perhaps another study aid will be useful, I.E., a router simulation program.
3/13/02 - Ken  from Canada says: Alas, another frustrating experience with a major vender. They are getting why to common lately. Why why why why.......
3/13/02 - Mark  from Stone Mountain says: C'mon people, lets have a reality check. If you go to the Cisco site (there are links to it just above in the certcities article) you will see that the TOPICS covered have not changed, just the way a few of the questions are asked! So a couple of them now are "cut-and-paste" format instead of multiple choice - so what?! If you know your material, it doesn't make a difference how the question is asked, does it? If you're memorizing rote answers to multiple choice questions, you really aren't learning the material anyway, so the cert would be meaningless. Besides, anyone who has taken any of the Microsoft exams, or the A+ or Network+ exams have already been exposed to this type of question - it ain't nothing to get so upset about! So go ahead and register for the 607 exam and kwitcherbichen! (btw, I am studying for the CCNA exam, and have yet to register so will take the 607 exam. Big deal, bring it on!)
3/13/02 - Matthew  from Charleston, SC says: I think this was a smart move on behalf of Cisco. I don't see where warning perspective test-takers would have done any good, unless those test-takers were seeking a 'paper CCNA' So, to all the people who read and memorized BrainDumps, and practice-tested until they knew just enough to pass the test, TOUGH titties :) About the college vs certification thing - I guess I'm lucky, my local college allows me to earn college credit toward my associates in Telecommunications Systems Mgmt. while preparing me for A+, Network+, MCSE, and MCNE. I think it's the coolest program ever :)
