Answers

1) Answer: a, c. You can use the Internet Options dialog box, which can be opened from IE or Control Panel, or the Disk Cleanup utility to delete temporary Internet files from a Windows 98 computer. These tools can also be used to delete temporary Internet files from Windows 2000 computers. You can display the Internet Options dialog box by selecting Internet Options... on the Tools menu in IE or by double-clicking the Internet Options icon in Control Panel. To delete temporary Internet files, you can click the Delete Files... button on the General tab of the Internet Options dialog box. You can start the Disk Cleanup utility by opening the Start menu and performing the following actions: point to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then choose Disk Cleanup. You can use the Disk Cleanup utility to delete temporary Internet files by selecting the hard disk where those files reside, clicking OK, selecting the Temporary Internet Files option on the General tab of the Disk Cleanup dialog box and clicking OK. You can use the Resource Meter to view the amount of RAM available on your Windows 98 computer. The System Properties sheet in Control Panel can be used to gain access to Device Manager, view basic statistics about a Windows 98 computer and create hardware profiles. You cannot use the Resource Meter utility or the System Properties sheet to delete temporary Internet files from a Windows 98 computer. 2) Answer: a. The most likely cause of the problem in this scenario is that a floppy disk is in the floppy disk drive. If you left the floppy disk that you used to save the Word document in the floppy disk drive and the floppy disk is not a startup disk, then an error will occur. This will happen during startup at the point when the computer's BIOS program examines the floppy disk for an operating system. If a computer reports that it cannot find an operating system, then you should ensure that there are no floppy disks in the floppy disk drive. A virus or a bad sector on a hard disk could also cause the problem in this scenario. You should normally begin troubleshooting by investigating the most likely possibilities and considering less likely possibilities as necessary. For example, if you find that there is no floppy disk in the floppy disk drive, then you may suspect a virus or a bad hard disk sector. TCP/IP uses Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to provide hosts on a TCP/IP network with unique addresses. If your computer is configured with an incorrect IP address, then it may not be able to communicate with other computers on a TCP/IP network. An incorrect IP address will not cause your computer to report that it cannot find an operating system at startup.   3) Answer: c. The System Information utility enables you to print system configuration information in Windows 98. You can use the System Information utility to view a wide variety of information about the configuration of your Windows 98 computer, such as the type of central processing unit (CPU) installed and the amount of random access memory (RAM) in your computer. To print system configurations, you can click the Print button in the Microsoft System Information window. The Winmsd.exe utility is a Windows NT and Windows 2000 utility that enables you to view system configuration information. The Winmsd.exe utility is not available in Windows 98. You can use the Sys command to transfer system files to a disk. For example, you can run the Sys c: a: command to transfer system files from hard disk C to floppy disk A. You can use the Performance Monitor tool in Windows NT or Windows 2000 to verify which system components, such as RAM, memory, network or disk subsystems on a computer, are producing performance bottlenecks. 4) Answer: c. A batch file is a text file that includes a list, or batch, of MS-DOS and other commands that the operating system can process sequentially. The Autoexec.bat file, for example, contains commands that are processed automatically each time your computer is started. You can create your own batch files. For example, a batch file named Text.bat that contains the following lines could be used to start Windows 3.1 from an MS-DOS command prompt:
cd\windows

win

After appending the .bat extension to the Text file, you can type Text.bat and press Enter at the command line. This will cause the operating system to open Text.bat, read its first command, and attempt to process it. In the example given, when the cd\windows command is processed, the operating system will change the current directory to the Windows directory. The win command on the next line of Text.bat will start Windows 3.1. Web pages normally use the .htm extension or the .html extension. Executable files that are larger than 64 kilobytes (KB) in size normally use the .exe extension. Executable files that are 64 KB and smaller normally use the .com extension. 5) Answer: c. The Progman.exe file is the default shell for the Windows 3.1 operating environment. Although you can configure the Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me operating systems to use the Progman.exe file as the shell, these operating systems, as well as Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, use the Explorer.exe file as the default shell. You can use the Autoexec.bat file to run programs automatically when you start a computer with a Microsoft operating system. The Msdos.sys file is a core operating system file in MS-DOS and cannot be configured. In Windows 9x and Windows Me, the Msdos.sys file is a text file, which contains configuration information used at startup. Reference: CTK2e, Contents, "Chapter 15 -- Software: MS-DOS and Windows 3.x," "Lesson 3: Windows 3.x."

6) Answer: b, c. To enable users on the network to connect to Printer1, you must enable file and printer sharing on your Windows 98 portable computer, and you must share the printer that is connected to your portable computer. Enabling file and printer sharing on your computer enables you to share resources such as files and printers with other computers on the network. After file and printer sharing has been enabled, specific resources such as Printer1 must be shared before they will be available to network users. You do not need to enable file and printer sharing on other network computers to enable users on those computers to use Printer1. If you wanted to make resources that are located on other network computers available, then you would need to enable file and printer sharing on those computers. Because Windows 98 can use NetBEUI, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP to share resources, you do not need to switch to IPX/SPX to share Printer1. 7) Answer: b. Of the choices listed, Erica must use Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) to retrieve the e-mail message that you sent her through the e-mail server at your company. The IMAP4 protocol offers more features than the Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) e-mail retrieval protocol. The POP3 protocol offers the ability to download e-mail messages from an e-mail server. IMAP4 adds the ability to keep one or more copies of an e-mail message on an e-mail server. IMAP4 also has other advanced features not supported by POP3, such as the ability to search a mailbox. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to download files from FTP servers within a connection on a TCP/IP network. Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) is a connectionless protocol used for file downloads. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) enables administrators to remotely administer devices on a TCP/IP network. 8) Answer: b. Of the choices listed, you should use the Disk Management utility to create a hard disk volume in Windows 2000. You can also use the Disk Management utility to delete volumes, format volumes and configure security settings on hard disk volumes. Disk Management is a snap-in within the Computer Management snap-in of the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). You can use the Disk Defragmenter utility to improve the performance of a hard disk volume by defragmenting the volume. You can use the ScanDisk utility to search a hard disk volume for file system errors such as lost clusters and cross-linked files. The Backup utility provides the ability to create a backup copy of the contents of selected portions of a hard disk volume.
