  • Federal Probe Targets ITT Tech

3/2/2004 -- Classes are back to normal at ITT Technical Institute campuses across the country after federal agents raided the company's headquarters and 10 of its campuses last week in response to grand jury subpoenas and search warrants seeking various enrollment data.

Last Wednesday, agents searched ITT's Indianapolis, Indiana headquarters and 10 schools, including campuses in California, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Oregon and Louisiana. The grand jury subpoenas that triggered the searches were issued by a U.S. District Court in Houston, and sought data on student placement, retention, attendance and grades, along with recruitment and admissions materials, graduate salaries, and transfers of credits to other schools.

Classes were cancelled for the day at the targeted campuses, and students, faculty and staff were questioned. In a statement, a U.S. attorney in Houston did not give a reason for the raids. No charges have been brought against the company.

ITT spokeswoman Nancy Brown said today that the probe won't affect current ITT students, and will have no effect on anyone holding a degree from any ITT Tech school. "All the colleges are open and functioning perfectly normally," she added.

At an investor conference call this morning, ITT's chairman and CEO, Rene R. Champagne said he believes the company has had strong internal controls and that the investigation "will show that we're in compliance." Analysts who focus on the education market said the probe might be related to Title IV, a federal regulation that requires education companies to report certain student data related to federal low-income grants to states. According to company regulatory filings, about 68 percent of ITT's 2003 revenue came from federal education aid programs.

The federal raids immediately affected the company's stock, which fell from last week's high in the mid-50s to a low of $34.50 last Thursday. ITT Educational Services Inc. trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "ESI." News of the probe also affected the entire for-profit education sector, whose shares tend to fluctuate as a group. ITT was trading around $35 a share by mid-week this week, and the remaining stocks in the sector had largely returned to their pre-probe numbers. "In light of the pending federal grand jury investigation of the company and resulting shareholder class action lawsuits," Champagne said during Wednesday's conference call with shareholders, "the company is not able to confirm the internal goals and other projections for the Company's 2004 fiscal year that were previously disclosed by the company."

The dramatic drop in stock prices triggered several class action lawsuits by investors late last week - a common practice when a stock price drops substantially. The lawsuits claim the company artificially maintained or inflated its stock price by issuing false facts or omitting other pertinent ones.

ITT, with some 75 locations in 30 states, is the largest operator in the U.S. of post-secondary school technical education. It offers technology-based associate, bachelor and masters degrees in a variety of subjects, including computer programming, Web development, and engineering, to over 37,000 students. It also offers online education. According to the U.S. Department of Education, ITT granted nearly 15 percent of the total number of associate and bachelor degrees awarded in the U.S. in electronics and electronics-related programs in the 2000-2001 school year, the largest percentage of any single institution. -Linda Briggs

7/29/09: Geronimo from burr ridge il, says:I go for criminal justice and the teachers are easy, and i even come to class high and stoned and get A's i hope i find a great job being a probation officer. One thing bad the cost of tuition, and the computers are dell garbage and the network is so slow and some computers don't work and this is soupposed to be a technical school? In addition the teachers have already had neumorus outings at BBQ restaurants and other places with our tuition money. We even were required to be at a carrer job fair and only like ten companies were there and it was mostly geared to people who already had a degree but everyone was required to attend. Also they have a nice flat screen aand an xxbox at the campuss and i'm starting to think that is what mosst people spend their time doing aandd paid their tuition to do. i have seen students miss so many classes and not get droped. And i have also seen students be given the option to make up work they did not turn in late making me mad because i did mine on time, really not worth it i would have to say.
7/30/09: Kevin from Green Bay, WI says:ITT Tech is expensive. The teachers have some unorthodox methods at times. Even with that said, I'd do it all over again without thinking twice. For each instructor I had that was "shady" (as some want to say) I was intelligent enough to see between the lines and learn the point they were making. They helped prepare me for the IT world very effectively. When I say "they" there were two specific instructors that assisted me through the two years I was there. Also, they have a great career services program to help you get your foot into the door at a job in your field.
9/5/09: Anonymous says:Here's the scam. Most people who go to ITT Tech saw it on TV and are poor. They can't qualify for any private loans, so ITT Tech gets the Stafford Loan. Then ITT Tech assigns the rest of the tuition to a fake loan called a CARP or something - there is no private loan, but it gets reported as a loan for collection. ITT Tech sells the fake loan to NCO Financial - who in turn reports it to the Dept. of Education. This fake loan will usually go into default because it's so big. And they pile interest on it. Then NCO tells the student they can get a government backed consolidation loan - NCO sells the fake loan to the Federal government - The Feds write them a check, and the student gets stuck with a fake loan enforced by the Federal government. In other words, ITT Tech is fleecing the Federal government with fake loans and high interest. Anybody still feel like going to ITT Tech? If this happened to you, you need to report it to the FBI and the IRS Financial Crimes Unit
9/16/09: former student in fl from pinellas park florid says:I am totally disappointed in this school. I was kicked out because of my former criminal background. I had already attended for 3 months and then they told me I wasnt allowed to attend anymore. They should have told me before i wasted 3 months. Not to mention $4000 dollars. I am going to sue them for discrimination.
10/14/09: Anonymous from VA says:Wanted to say that I would NOT recommend this school to my worst enemy! The school really screwed me over, not making me aware of the "ITT Loans that I were given" are actually turned over to collections right after graduating, no option of paying the loans back before hand are even given. Would be nice of them to tell their students BEFORE they agree to the loans. If I would have known that the loans were turned over to collections without even given the option to make payments, I would have never even attended. Also, when I enrolled I was told that it was a credited school and that credits were transferable which ARE NOT!
10/16/09: Anonymous says:I worked hard at ITT Tech and have had great jobs and made a lot of money. Those people who but it down are just ruining their investment. Others from my class are making the fat fives and have had happy lives
10/19/09: dale says:I'd like to see any more recent comments. I have a meeting at ITT in Youngstown Ohio tomorrow, but a friend warned me that their degrees are essentially worthless. After hearing that, I did some digging around and found this site. Newer comments are appreciated.
10/22/09: to dale says:There are numerous boards and websites regarding the tragedy known as ITT Technical Institute, complete with recent stories, comments, and advice. Please try harder to find them. Regards.
11/3/09: Groursodo from Singapore says:Howdy I only at present stumbled upon the site and was totally blown away by how magnificent it is! 11/3/09: Nick says:Greg from Little Rock. Considering you cannot make a paragraph that is legible i would say you're an idiot and no matter how much they teach you, you will fail at life.
