Cisco Announces New 2-for-1 CCIP Exam

2/17/2004 -- On March 10 Cisco Systems will debut a new two-for-one exam that will combine the Configuring BGP on Cisco Routers (BGP) and Implementing Cisco MPLS (MPLS) exams for its Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional (CCIP) credential.

The new exam, 642-691 BGP+MPLS, will also serve as the recertification exam for current CCIPs. The CCIP must be renewed every three years.

Currently, earning a CCIP requires passing four exams:

  • 642-801 BSCI: Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI)
  • 642-641 QoS: Implementing Cisco Quality of Service (QoS)
  • 642-661 BGP: Configuring BGP on Cisco Routers (BGP)
  • 640-910 MPLS: Implementing Cisco MPLS (MPLS)

When the new exam debuts, candidates will be able to choose between the traditional path or the new two-in-one option.

The 642-691 BGP+MPLS will be longer than the traditional Cisco exam: 80 to 90 questions v.s. the typical 60 to 70. However, it will cost the same: $125 (U.S.), allowing candidates to pay half of what it would cost to take the separate BGP and MPLS exams ($250 total).

More information on this new exam can be found here. -Becky Nagel

2/17/04: Anonymous says: What's the prospect of this CCIP path? It's not a common title that people have, is it useful at all? I know CCNP and CCSP have gained more popularity.
2/17/04: Cliff from Tucson says: Cisco is always setting the standard and their a tuff act to follow (Microsoft). My last thought on this is Cisco is class act. Why would you be anything other then cisco certified?
2/17/04: Smoky McPot says: 420
2/18/04: Anonymous says: less'money! read the damn article... lol
2/18/04: Peety from San Antonio says: I can understand the logic in joining the exams, but I'd hate to bomb half of it and have to retake the whole thing. BGP wasn't bad, but it's my job. MPLS is new to me, so it'll be an experience (and next week, to be exact).
2/18/04: Becky Nagel from Editor, CertCities.com says: CORRECTION: This story originally said that the CCIP must be reviewed every two years, based on a typo on the Cisco certification Web site. The above story has been updated to indicate the correct renewal period for the certification, three years.
