CompTIA May Take Network+ Adaptive, Update A+

10/23/2002 -- Tancy Stanbery, certification program manager for the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), told CertCities.com yesterday that the company is evaluating its Network+ exam for adaptive format.

CompTIA had stated on its Web site that the adaptive version of the Network+ exam would be released in December, but then it quickly pulled that information from the Web site. Stanbery said that the decision to make Network+ adaptive is still under consideration. "It's a time consuming processes [to take an exam adaptive]," she explained. "We're not sure yet if we want to commit to that."

The adaptive format is a testing method in which the number of questions that appear on an exam is determined by a tester's answers during the exam, with right answers given more weight than wrong answers in the final test score. CompTIA is one of a handful of certification providers who use adaptive testing for some exams in order to limit question exposure.

CompTIA also pulled information that stated that it would release new A+ and Network+ objectives in January.

Stanbery told CertCities.com that the Network+ objective information is false -- there is no objectives changed scheduled for that exam.

She said that a revision of the A+ objectives is currently being evaluated, but a final decision won't be made until later this year. She said that, if needed, new objectives would be released in the February 2003 time frame, with the exam to follow approximately six months later.

A CompTIA spokesperson blamed the misinformation on the launch of its newly redesigned Web site and said that the section would reappear shortly with corrected information.

CompTIA's Web site can be found at http://www.comptia.org.

10/23/02: Anonymous says: I think adaptive tests with simulators are the best kind to take. This way you can't pass a test with dumb luck like you can an MCSE test. Adaptive tests are better I think because you need to know an answer to a question and be sure of it. No opportunity to go back and change it and maybe get it right by changing it. Makes for a harder test with or without simulations. That is one reason I feel the CNE is a not so much sought after credential and also that is it considered to be more difficult due to its adaptive testing nature.
10/24/02: SomeoneInsideWithAClue from Oakbrook Terrace, IL says: What a laugh! This illustrates just how incredibly clueless CompTIA is! First, they dumb down the Network(plus) exam by revising it to meet the expectations of anyone with 9 monthes experience with a computer, then they talk about making it adaptive. There is nothing wrong with the adaptive format if you understand the psychometrics behind it - which CompTIA does not. They rank all questions in three categories - easily, medium, and hard and then make the hard questions worth 1300 because it is easier than their hiring anyone who knows what they are doing. Add to that the statmement that they are considering adaptive testing to limit exposure to the database. HaHaHaHa! With a pass rate near 75% - the highest in the entire industry - you don't have a whole lot of exposure to the database in the first place!

10/25/02: Anonymous says: Do we not like the CNE credential?
10/29/02: Anonymous says: I read recently in Certification Magazine that CompTIA is going to take the Microsoft route and "revamp" their tests every 18-24 months. Not all of us can afford to take exams, let alone re-educate ourselves in this economy. STOP GEARING EVERYTHING TO THE RICH!!!
10/29/02: Becky Nagel from Editor, CertCities.com says: Hey Anonymous -- dont' worry! CompTIA certifications are good for life, so you don't need to upgrade every time the exam is upgraded.
11/7/02: Ambiso from Phoenix says: Adaptive exams rule !!!!!
11/16/02: Mark S. says: I think the Adaptive format is better because if you know the material you dont have to sit thru a bunch of easy questions. I also think that all IT Certifications should require to be Re-Certified every 24-36 months at a very low price say $40.00.
11/26/02: J from Vallhalla says: Mark, Re-cert is definitely in order, however, $40??? I'm not a cheap person on the average, but what the hell is this cost estimate based on? First of all, 135 or 125 is rediculous to begin with. 40 is still on the stupid side. Tests should be bought in value packs that maybe expire after 2 years or so. Re-cert value packs maybe wont expire for 3-4 years. Make a value pack of lets say 5 tests worth what one costs today. Anyone listening ???
