CISSP Hits 10,000; SSCP Fee Hike Near

10/2/2002 -- The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC(2)) announced yesterday that its Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) title has hit the 10,000 mark.

ISC(2) honored its 10,000th CISSP, Denmark-based Jakob Frydendal, earlier this week at organization's annual meeting, held in London.

"In the last two years, ISC(2) has seen the expansion of the information security profession's responsibility and influence within organizations worldwide," James E. Duffy, managing director for (ISC)2, said in a printed statement. "Certification uniquely identifies information security professionals who are best suited to fill the needs of executive-level positions in both government and private industry."

In other ISC(2) news, according to the Web site CCCure.org, ISC(2) has it announced it will be raising the exam fees for its lower-level certification, the Systems Security Certified Practitioner, in 2003.

Currently, the SSCP costs either $295 or $395 U.S., depending on when the candidate registers for the exam. According to CCCure.org, this will rise to $350 or $450 beginning Jan. 1, 2003.

10/2/02: suckaP says: Ten thousands crackheads who believe the CISSP actually means anything. What a joke!
10/8/02: Clement Dupuis from Montreal, Canada says: Good day SuckaP, The CISSP certification has its value. It has to be put into context however. Getting this certification or any other certification without having hard core real life experience will not make you a better security specialist. There is also some misconception about what a CISSP is, I often see Firewall Admin job where the requirement is to have CISSP, I would most certainly hire a GCFW from SANS before a CISSP to do my firewall admin. The fact that you insinuate that the CISSP is not worth anything does not bring any good to the certification world. I believe that it has its place as well as all of the other technical certifications. Clement
10/17/02: Editor@certtimes from Clearwater, FL says: Great response Clement and right on the money. In the first place, the CISSP is by far one of the most difficult certifications to earn. Good luck going to a bootcamp and getting certified in seven days on this one. The 10 disciplines which you need to have a full understanding of are each worthy of a mini-cert in themselves. Plus, with the way the ISC2 folks constantly change the question databases, you can't memorize the answers. I've a good friend who has run a security company for fifteen years. The first time he took the CISSP, he passed with flying colors on 8 domains, but failed in 2 he didn't normally do much with. So maybe you need to take a look at who the real sucka is.
10/18/02: SSCPguy from St.Pete, FL says: Anybody familiar with infosec will realize that security issues are business issues that permeate many areas including technology deployment. ISC2 does a great job in the CBK domains, experience requirements and tests to ensure that the holder of CISSP or SSCP comprehends and can apply and correlate business, technical, and legal practices for infosec. One note, the SSCP is a more technical, senior administrative or project manager level credential and covers 7 of the 10 domains related to CISSP. More focus on implementation oriented topics is required. I have achieved the SSCP and will testify that the broad areas that need to be completely understood is a challenge (and that's with 22 years of progressive experience in this business). This is no product certification with a narrow scope. Furthermore, products come and go. Business and technical issues remain. Let's not forget why business buys technology - to help the business, not for narrow-minded technicians' amusement. Here's to the continued growth of CISSP and SSCP!
11/7/02: MD from Casablanca NJ says: Please remove the SuckaP letter from the top of the replies. Illiteracy is fast and short. I hate stuffy letters just like the next guy but stupid isn't worth anyones time.
11/12/02: CISSP certified from NC says: I believe suckaP failed his exam on CISSP.
12/24/02: SuckaMe says: SuckaP can SuckaMe. What a fool.
1/23/03: securetech from MD says: SuckaP has no idea what he's talking about. While I haven't taken the test yet, I will be next week. I've read the Que book and Koontz's books on CISSP cover to cover (which reads over 1000 pages on security issues) and I've taken classes at the ISC2 institute which were in depth on everything from commerce and web sites to hacks and preventative measures. I'd say the training offered is pretty much right on the money & I've worked in network management for 10 years running systems of 10,000+ nodes and servers. If suckP can match any CISSP it would be on their worst day I'm sure. I'd like to hear how he handles his own security?
2/24/03: Me2 from CA says: While SuckaP's delivery could be better, the defensive remarks generated by his post tell me something more. I have the CISSP and I think the test was a joke. I wish it were more valuable because I paid for it myself and put an effort into studying. Like the MCSE, CCNP, Aplus, etc, it is a written exam with cram guides and brain dumps everywhere. I know of several people that have less than three months experience who are cramming the test. ISC2 does not verify their experience requirements. Just about anybody can read a book and pass this test. Those of you that actually meet the experience requirements should be mad... because some joker has the same cert as you do and all they had to do was pay around $550 and cram a book. To me, the CISSP is not valuable because all it tests is your ability to cough up $550. SANS? Just about the same thing, but the essay requirement actually takes work... that helps.
