Novell Temporarily Drops Most Master CNE Requirements
8/14/2002 -- Through January 2003, Certified Novell Engineers (CNEs) who want to add the word "Master" to their certification don't need to take the four Master-level exams normally required to achieve the title.
Instead, Novell is allowing all NetWare 5.x CNEs to become Master CNEs by passing two exams: one that upgrades their CNE title to version 6 (exam #50-676), and CompTIA's IT Project+ exam (which is a continuing certification requirement for the standard Master track).
Karl Childs, manager of Novell's certification program, told CertCities.com that the temporary promotion is designed to increase the number of Master CNEs. "We wanted to create a strong volume of voice for Master CNEs in this industry...We want to make sure these professionals are heard," he explained. "This should help us increase their numbers."
Childs said that so far, it appears to be working. "We have a self-study kit for IT Project+ that we've already sold out....twice," he noted. "We currently have 8,000 Master CNEs....I expect we'll have 3,000 or 4,000 more [by the end]."
Childs said the program has received some negative feedback from Master CNEs who earned their title the traditional way. He said that although nothing has of yet been decided, there's a possibility that the program could place more demanding continuing certification requirements on Master CNEs who earn their title through the promotion.

Yeah - this is great but increasing numbers and making sure people know Novell Technologies... what the heck is more important. While watching Novells stock price plummet, one would only guess why they continue to smack the faces of their loyal supporters. Good one Novell, well you may have gained 3000 more, but you will lose the original 8000. I can promise you at least 8 MCNE's that I know. Good Job. |

There is a continuing need to constantly learn, update and revise, especially IT certifications. Maybe the current master CNE's wouldn't mind if the new cert was called "MCNE+", to distinguish it from the previous name. That way they'd keep their "I erned it the old fashioned way" mentality, if it really is a factor, and could always upgrade to the new cert if they wanted. And more demanding continuing education requirements isn't neccessarily a bad thing...as long as it's related to performing the job better, not just pumping the certification dollars or expanding numbers. |

Curt doesn't seem to understand - the new MCNE certification requirements are not an upgrade and they are certainly not more demanding than the old requirements. I agree with Robert - the new requirements are a slap in the face to those previously certified. Is Novell telling me that what I learned to earn my MCNE isn't important anymore? If the geniuses at Novell continue with quality decisions like this it won't be. Maybe the company that ends up buying up Novell technology will do a better job of running the farm. |

Forget about the CNEs having to do these 2 exams. The present MCNEs also has to do these same 2 exams as a part of Continuing Certification Requirements. So in effect Novell has devalued all their 8000 MCNEs to the level of CNEs by asking them to do the same as the present CNEs.Great job Novell.This will probably be the last time I bother to complete my CCR. |

Hey, you guys are complaining ? Does anybody in this forum know what an Enterprise CNE is ? No ? OK, this was Novell's highest certification - before the MCNE. Than Mr. Frankenstein, (oops, Mr. Frankenberg) deceided to cancel the ECNE in favour of the MCNE. All ECNEs became MCNEs over night ? Sorry guys, new name, new program, do all exams again and you can use your ECNE certificate as scratch paper. So be a friendly lot, let CNEs have their fun and pray that you can keep your certificate when the new requirements for MCNEs come out. By the way, I am a CDE, I'm waiting for my benefits for over a year now and do you know what the best story is ? I took four attempts on the Practicum, had to travel over 800 kilometers, now Mr. Novell says there is a new Practicum for every existing CDE or new CDE. Isn't that nice ? |

Ive been CNE since 1997 (also MCSE since 2000) and here in my market charlotte nc even with experience, certifications, professional references and a 4 year degree just finding a position in IT is not proving easy. Comments from others in your markets welcome! |

This is typical Novell - great products, bad marketing, poor support for their strongest supporters. Last year Novell drop the MCNE specialties. Now the difference between a CNE and a Master CNE is one low-level, non-technical course that provides no additional knowledge about Novell. In a year, employers are going to learn that many MCNEs don't know any more about NetWare than the CNEs. Then watch MCNE salaries drop. Thanks again, Red. |
