CompTIA IT Apprenticeship Program Moves Forward

6/5/2002 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), which received a $550,000 grant from the federal government last year to launch an IT apprenticeship program, announced last month that the project is currently in pilot phase.

Entry-level IT professionals are now working as apprentices for at least two U.S. companies: Henkels & McCoyIT, a national utility construction company, and Henckle, N.J.-based Exodus IT Services.

The apprentices get paid, hands-on experience as well as supplemental technical instruction. The program emphasizes CompTIA's entry-level IT certifications, such as A+ and Network+.

"The apprenticeship approach is an economical and efficient way of developing skilled and competent IT workers," said Neill Hopkins, CompTIA vice president of workforce development. "People learn by doing, not just by sitting and listening. We determined the best preparation for IT to be a combination of classroom instruction, on-the-job training and demonstration of progress through professional certification."

When the program launches nationally (expected later this year), CompTIA said it will register the apprenticeships with the U.S. Department of Labor"to ensure, through standards, that working apprentices, program sponsors and employers follow 'best practices' and receive maximum benefit from the apprenticeship methodology." Employers will then be able to modify these standards to develop custom programs for their IT workers.

"With a federally approved program in place, there will be no misalignment between what a company expects and what a company gets. For the company it's a pay-for-performance process; for the worker it's a clear, unambiguous path toward a lifelong career," said Hopkins.

CompTIA recently completed research which it says shows the need for the program, but did not say how many employers it estimates will participate.

6/5/02: MCSEMOM from Canada says: Living in Canada and always attempting to be on cutting edge of IT I'm thrilled to see the program go ahead and be adopted by the US government. It would be wonderful if the Canadian govenment would undertake the same approach to IT. I will champion the cause here in this country and am glad the CompTia is leading the pack!
6/7/02: Anonymous in NY says: How does one get involved in this apprenticeship program? I am A plus certified and registered with CompTia Job plus job bank-I haven't received any information from CompTia about it's apprenticeship program. Here in NY it is tough finding an entry level job-the IT market crashed here along with everything else.
6/10/02: Becky Nagel from Web Editor, CertCities.com says: Hi Anonymous -- I'm pretty sure they'll announce something later this year when the program goes "live." In the meantime, I think you need to get a job with the companies listed above that are participating in the pilot program. You might want to try contacting CompTIA directly to let them know this is something you're interested in and see if they're maybe taking names of people (might be worth a shot!)? -- Becky Nagel, Web Editor, CertCities.com
6/14/02: Anonymous from UK says: HI I LIVE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM IS IT POSSIBLE TO AQUIRE THESE SKILLS THROUGH SELECTED PARTICIPANTS HERE?
11/26/02: Carl Rice from Hampton Virginia says: After completing Two years of a five year electrical apprenticeship, I have decided to switch my career path to a IT related position. My question is should I have any pre required training to participate in this upcoming IT apprenticeship training. Also how could Iget a head start on finding out companies that may participate locally in this IT apprenticeship program. Forgive me in advance if my terminology seems off. Thank You Carl in Hampton Va
